1) The most likely cause of bad AM reception is a bad antenna
or a broken antenna cable, somewhere behind the dash.

Because FM is roughly 100x the frequency of AM, it requires
a much less efficient antenna, and the signal tends to jump over
small wire gaps or breaks.

2) The next likely problem is the reception area. AM is much less penetrating than FM, but it does go around things like
buildings, while FM tends to reflect off of them causing nodal
interference. AM also goes beyond the horizon, FM does not.
FM may work underground and in garages, on the other hand,
and AM may not. AM reflects from the ionosphere and travels
great distances at night, FM does not.

but

AM is much more sensitive to atmospheric noise, electrical
noise, thunder storms, ignition noise ... etc, and AM sound
quality is by design much lower.

3) Make sure that your antenna is rated for both AM and FM,
some are not. Theoretically, a simple antenna needs to
at least 1/4 wavelength long at the receiving frequency.

While this theoretical distance represents around 3 ft at FM
frequencies, it is hundreds of feet for AM. Because such a
large antenna is not practical for cars or portable radios,
other technology is required to make up for this.

3) Many car radios have a tuning capacitor on the back, which
could be mis-adjusted. This capacitor makes the antenna
look much longer, than it actually is in an electrical sense.

4) When you say the radio gets interference, is this cackle
and hiss like a weak station, or are you getting motor
ignition noise, ie. clicks at low RPM ==> annoying
whine at high RPM ?

This would be caused by the car or by poor installation,
not by the radio itself.

How does the radio work with the motor turned off?

5) The radio itself could of course be also defective, because
the AM and FM parts are totally separate and different. This
could be due anything from internal mis-alignment of the
mixer and IF stages, to a cracked circuit board or a bad
chip or transistor.

Is it a VW AUDI Ford Gallaxy? with the aerial inbeded in the glass or a bee sting on the roof?

You may need a power antenna feed. part# PC5-90

or if your car has a electric aerial is it working?

or is your fixed aerial damaged?

Modern AM reception is usually quite bad. We are used to the high quality sound from other formats and FM, AM has a very compressed frequency range so will always sound poor in comparison. The interference could be due to poor earthing or suppression on the electrical equipment in the car. Usual suspects are ignition, wiper motors and fans. A suppressor between the +V and earth usually help, fitted as close to each device as possible. The devices causing the interference can be pin pointed by turning one electrical item on at a time and seeing if it causes a problem. Another issue is that a lot of modern vehicles use the rear screen demister as an aerial, which can cause bad reception and interference. An external aerial is always best.

Had the face stolen off Alpine CDA-9847! Will another model fit this unit? If not where can I buy just the face (Halfords want £95!)

Had a quick look on Ebay, there is only one bieng sold. Do a search for item number 330262508262

Its located in America, just to be on the safe side ask the seller a question to see if he will send to the UK.

The alternatives is to pay what halfords is asking or buy a new stereo.

Hope this helps

Adding MP3 Input to Kenwood R/C

To be honest, I can't find one spec of info on that stereo on the internet. It's possible the DIN connection you see is for controlling a CD changer. If so, it's possible you can use either this cable or this cable to turn it into an AUX input. But without a manual or anything, it's hard to know for sure. You have to contact Kenwood.
