The lens error is due to failure of the lens control system. You can remove battery and card replace battery and while switching on tap the lens hood on your hands so as to disengage any dirt or mechanism being struck.
Use some air to blow between the lens to dislodge any sand particles struck inside. If none of these works then you can think of taking consensus with the service centre.
get estimate before you decide. It will be good to have it checked at the Nikon service as you do not have to run around for spares.

Lens error on Nikon coolpix S202

Try jiggling the lens. Use compressed air to blow out any grit around the lens barrel. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to get the camera serviced.

Same thing happened to me!!!

1)Remove the lens from the camera. Put the body cap on the camera, and put the rear lens cap on the back of the lens. Make sure you are in a clean environment.

2)Take the rear cap off the lens and use the blower to blow large pieces of dust off the lens. Go around the entire rear part of the lens with the blower.

3)Dip the swab in the isopropyl alcohol or cleaning solution. You should use only a light amount; the best way to ensure this is to wear light vinyl gloves, like those used by health care providers, and squeeze the swab with your fingers after dipping it in the solution. Gently clean the contacts on the lens with the swab. After you have done so, use the blower on the lens contacts again.

4)Repeat the procedure on the contacts on the camera body.

5)Reattach the lens to the camera and test it to see if the error or focusing problems still exist. If they do, try cleaning the contacts again.

Nikon Coolpix S60 Lens Error Message

since you said you dropped the camera the lenz array might have cracked. try tapping the device while the message appears, if it works then you are a lucky one. in no you have to take it to the service centre to get it done. it costs about (50-60)$

Nikon Coolpix S202

My nikon coolpix s210 had a "lens error" after several months of use. The tapping of the camera against my hand did not work. Eventually i did use the method of putting my nail under the lens and pulling as I tried turning the camera on. I had to apply a good amount of force and was afraid i would break the camera, but after doing this several times, the lens did click back into place.

Nikon Coolpix S202 "lens error"

This is probably THE single most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
