Please make sure that a soda can will not fit between the slats as that is the current safety guideline for cribs. As to the sides staying up; if you cannot get the hardware to work, you can drill a nail-sized hole through the side and into the head and foot boards and put a pin through. Later you can put a screw with a wing nut to hold it against little clever fingers. Hope this pertains to your particular model. Happy grandparenting:)
