SOURCE: hard disk icon disappeared from desktop

To add the hard disk icon back onto your desktop, first click the "Finder" button in the dock. It is the dark and light smily face icon at the end of the dock.

Next, click the "Finder" menu item at the top of the screen and then "Preferences". In the "Finder Preferences" window that opens, click the "General" button. From there you can select what system items appear on your desktop. You can click "Hard disks" to re-add the hard disk icon.

SOURCE: imac G5 desktop rebuilds randomly

When a mac does this it is related to what is called the Finder which handles the graphical interactions with the operating system. First thing you should do is run maintenance. An excellent free tool for doing this is Onyx which can be downloaded here... http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html (be sure to download the right version for your system).
Install the package, then run it, it will check your drive and the structure, after this, click on the automation tab and check on everything for Maintenance, Clear Cache, Cleaning, and check on Reset -> LaunchServices database and Mail's Envelope Index. When it completes, restart and this should clear up your problem.

Where can one buy a replacement pcb control board for a iomega 'ultramax plus' unit? My existing one has a damaged IC component at 'U4'....and possibly more elsewhere on the board.

No one sells what you're looking for. I'm assuming the drives were in a raid configuration which means you can't put them in an enclosure to get the data off. Your best bet is to purchase another unit and replace the drives. This thing is hella expensive. If you don't need the data you can get a different one bigger and cheaper. http://www.sears.com/iomega-33991-esata-firewire-800-firewire-400-usb-2.0-500gb/p-00389575000P

Iomega Ultramax red light turns on at start.

It's probably the power supply. Iomega has been having lots of power cord failures. I had same problems and thought it was the drives until I did a internet search and saw lots of people having the same trouble. I called Iomega and they sent me a new cord. Problem fixed. It's the little black box that dies...

no --there are no engineers at fixya site
from your description the aux hard drive has failed
Most hard drives using discs are good for around 3 years max and then the bushes and bearings fail
If that is the case then you will have to find a repair shop that has the capability to remove the disc from the hard drive and recover all that you have saved
if it as what I have suggested then consider this
There are hard drives (SSHD) on the market that use solid state technology and do not have spinning discs that fail over time
The cost is around $60.00 per gig of storage
best if you take it to a computer repair shop for a proper diagnosis and while there discuss the SSHD technology to prevent failures in future

Iomega hard drives seem to give my MAc finder brain freeze

It's possible that ONE (or maybe BOTH) of the drives are defective. Disconnect one of them, and continue to use your computer. If the "freeze" never appears, then the non-connected drive is defective, and, since it is a "new" drive, you can get it replaced, for free, under warranty. If the "freeze" appears, then the currently-connected drive is defective, and needs to be replaced.

Ticking noise

Hello,

Ticking noises are indicative of major hardware failures. As no HDD manufacturer actually warranties data, if you have important files on it your drive, you will likely need the help of a pro.

If you have all your data backed up elsewhere(including on the Mac), contact Iomega and have it replaced under warranty.

If you do need files recovered, let me know as well as your region and I will recommend a good location.

External drive wont mount

Hi,

Try doing flea power & the power cycle.

1. Disconnect all the peripherals like keyboard, mouse, printer, scanner & monitor and power supply from the CPU.

And press & hold the power button for 2 min, it will release the flea power from the mother board.

Restart the system & check.

2. Disconnect everything.wait for 5-10 minutes and then connect every thing.

Restart the system.

If it does not resolve the issue then you can try this :

Check this before you try to edit the registry values.

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/profiles.1.html

Just remove the registry key it happen when this key is corrupted.

HLKM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR

And delete all references to the external hard drive.

And also HLKM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

and found the keys associated with the USB to IDE value.

After restarting the system, the drive shold be detected & configured automatically by the computer.

I would remove the drive from the case and plug it in to my computer directly. Image it, and replace it. All data will be retained.
