Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

Open Question

I have a GE over the range microwave oven Mod # JMV1660WB 001 S/n GV9504945 with Samsung vent fan Mod # SMV-260UA. The left squirrelcage fan blade broke and 3 of the fins broke out while it was running.(Made a heck of a racket) The motor and right side fan assembly are fine so and because of the cost of the whole vent motor assembly, I am really only looking for the left side plastic squirrelcage fan assembly or blade.(The left side is white and marked L while the right side is black and marked R) Do you know of any possible place that I might find just the part either new or used to repair it? Thanks for any help you can give on this. Tony aleshelema@embarqmail.com or aleshlem@te.com

SOURCE: GE Microwave vent fan replacement.

The part # SMV-260UA runs just under $60 from SamsungParts, depending on which of three versions you choose. You can find them here.

And a simple Google search shows quite a few hits for "SMV-260UA" and they seem to run about $40, assuming the listings aren't bogus - as so many search results are.

I have a few "new old stock" and used vent & cooling fans here.

I would be happy to supply one whole or just the blades if you like.

Just tell me the dimensions: diameter of the shaft hole and the length and diameter of the "squirrel cage" itself and I'll see if one of mine would work.

SOURCE: GE Microwave vent fan replacement

(I'm assuming you're talking about the hood / vent / exhaust fan instead of the internal magnetron cooling fan).

The part # SMV-260UA-C will not be enough to go on, as there at least 3 variations on that number shown at Samsung parts.

These microwaves are made by Samsung, but you'd need the GE part number to replace the whole thing. They don't sell the blades separately.

The part # for the "ventilation motor" is WB26X10042 and you can find it for $97.11 here, which is about fifty dollars less than direct from GE.

I may have available a replacement flan blade off a used unit. If you'll send me the dimensions, I'll check. I need the length of the fan blade, the diameter, and the inside diameter / shaft size, and whether the shaft is round or "D" shaped.

Please feel free to contact me directly.

Vent on oven does came on by itself. The oven is hot and the vent does not go off.

The oven MAY have a thermal switch that forces the fan on when hot.

If it stays on when fully cool then there is a problem.

Bearings on the cooling fan for the magnetron have let go; squirrelcage has been scraping and now has seized. Can fan be replaced? It appears to be imbedded in a sealed case. Ian

The whole UNIT must be replaced for reasons of safety. There has been a malfunction of the magnetron or it had been used on a wrong program for the excessive heating.
confirm the cost and replace.

Most Microwaves arrive ready to vent back into the room. For filtered air returned to the room it should face toward the front. For top vent, point to the top. for rear wall vent point toward the back.

GE Microwave Profile Spacemaker Runs on its own

Your microwave turning on by itself is a "self preservation feature" of the GE Profile Advantium and maybe some other models. Read the manual, When your over the range oven gets warm enough, for whatever reason the venting fan comes on until a satisfactory oven temperature is reached. You are not permitted to shut the vent fan off. Also it seems a temperature near room temp must be achieved before it shuts the fan motor off, it is very annoying. We had to return our Advantium because of fan noise. I configured the ovens vent fan to the recirculate direction because we do not have a vent duct that exits the house over our range. When the vent fan acting as the ovens cooling fan automatically turned on we would have to leave the house to hear each other talk. Too bad we really liked the oven other than that major problem. Suction fan on GE over-the-range microwave

If the blade is not big enough, the motor not powerful enough, or the vent size is wrong then it will not work properly, On thing you can do is check the vent cap and make sure that it has not falling down onto the vent pipe and blocking air movement.

VENT NOT SUCKING

I would suggest checking the filters, checking the duct work (including the outdoor vent) and if that doesn't turn up the problem, the hood vent exhaust fan blade assembly may have come loose on the shaft.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here to help you verify the filter status and duct work.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

GE Microwave vent fan replacement.

First of all, if it's just the plastic (nylon) fan blade that's melted, most any fan blade should work. I'd take the blade and motor to a local appliance parts shop and see if they have just a blade assembly that would fit. Normally the shaft diameter is standard and the only consideration is to get a blade assy whose outside diameter and thickness are the same or a little less than the original. Concerning the original part # you gave there are 3 Samsung parts that match up on http://www.samsungparts.com : Part Number Description Specification Price DE31-10178A MOTOR-VENTILATION SMV-260UA,120V,60Hz,31 $67.78 DE31-10178B MOTOR-VENTILATION SMV-260UA-1,-,-,-,-,-, $70.09 DE31-10178E MOTOR VENTILATION SMV-260UA-N,-,-,120V60 $67.87 Lastly, if there happen to be any numbers on the blade assembly itself, you can check them to see if they're good numbers at http://www.samsungparts.com Good luck!
