Does there seem to be a pattern to the beeps? (long beep, pause, long beep or 3 beeps and a pause) The codes will depend on the motherboard and BIOS manufacturer. One of the Gateway code lists: http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/Intel2/WMEBLKD925XBCLK/WMEBLKD925XBCLKfaq17.shtml .

One beep is a CPU error. Three beeps is a memory error - you can remove and reseat the memory one stick at a time to find a bad stick causing them all to fail. Eight beeps is a video error.

I hope this helps.

Hello
Try complety unpluging pc for 60 seconds.Plug back in,see what happens.
Next you may want to have a lookinside for any loose or untight cables.
Usaually beeping or the way it beeps is an error code that something is wrong inside.
If you choose to have a look inside check for dirt or dust and remove with a vacum or a can of compressed air.
Taks note of the beeps or beeping,is it a steady beep or 3 short beeps,It may need to go into the shop.

My gateway desktop wont boot, it only beeps 3 times, one long beep follow by two short beeps...

Welcome to Fixya!

You will need to remove the RAM modules and clean their gold fingered connectors with tissue paper. Also clean the RAM slots with a vaccum cleaner, be very careful through. Once cleaned install the RAM modules one at a time as one may be faulty and then power on your computer.

Take care!

Memory reads 128 mb vs 512 mb when new memory installed

Reseat the memory and try rebooting the pc,If it still shows 128mb then take out the 128mb memory and leave in the new one.If the PC does not boot or gives you beep codes then the new memory is faulty.

Gateway gt5220 beeping noises, fan on.

What may be happening is that files are corrupt as a result of a HD failure. This is not that uncommon. It has happened to my computers causing strange beeps and often repeated clicking noise coming from the hard drive. HD failure can happen anytime; when booting up, while the computer is running. The only way I've found to fix this is to buy a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system and programs you typically use.

You may be able to recover files from the ailing drive however. After you get the new hard drive working with your newly installed operating system and all is working, you can setup the ailing drive as a slave while setting your new drive as a master. You need to power off the computer and consult the data sheets for jumper settings.

This will allow you to boot up and access your old HD as a spare. If your lucky the data files, pics, music and documents you created will be in a region of the hard drive that isn't corrupted. Be prepared however to expect some unrecoverable files. If there is physical damage to the drive mechanism like a stuck read/write head then you may be totally out of luck. I have in some instances been able to unstick the HD by giving it a sharp rap on it's edge and even opening it to push the head free. Success for such a radical procedure is rare, but when it works, you have enough time to copy files over before enough dust collects on the exposed HD.

Assuming your able to access the old HD as a secondary drive, copy all of your files over to a backup directory on the new HD. I would recommend an expternal backup HD that can be used to automatically save your files before the next failure happens.
