Question about Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router
Can be a couple of things. All of them are setting type stuff so mildly annoying.
If you have never used the wifi it may be disabled. You would need to connect with a wired cable and then enable and configure the wifi section.
On a new laptop the wifi is never enabled. Now it's very tempting to say there is a switch, just turn it on, and then see how long it takes you to find it. Laughing here because everyone always ends up hunting for that stupid switch. And the first time I had a wifi laptop to setup it took an embarrassing 45 minutes to find it.
Luckily the customer was no where near me ;-] It is usually in one of three places. Front, on the sides or may be above the keyboard by the screen. If you look at your laptop user manual the first section usually shows where everything is 'supposed' to be.
If you do have the wifi working and can see other networks you may just need to setup the connection. This may include a security key aka WEP or WPA key or pass phrase. As well you may need to put a gateway number in if it can see the network but won't get out to the internet, and DNS (name server) numbers.
When you know what you need to setup then we can give you instructions for just that bit. Otherwise there are a few pages of unneeded typing.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

if you are having problems with your Linksys routers, reset the router and configure it again. In configuring the router, I suggest that you use the online tool that will automatically configure your router. It is similar with the setup cd but the online tool works better. The reason why the setup cd fails is that it has its own bugs. So just use the online tool. You can get the online tool on this website--www.linksys.com/easy.

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:
Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.
On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)
Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.
Do this on each PC and Laptop.
That should be it or darned near close.

Check your router's IP address from the Compaq machine. Get a command prompt and type ipconfig .all
Then wright down the IP settings.
Check the IP settings of the Macbook Pro. Adjust settings. You can give a Static IP also. If needed. But you have to set the default gateway -Enter previouse IP settings for those.
Check ur Wi-Fi settings also.
If this is helpful to u please rate
Wish U Luck

Try setting up a new network connection in the Network and Sharing Center. You'll need your info from your router like:
network name (ssid):
network security type:
network security key:
Some will also ask for a serial id(I've only ever come across one)
I've never used your particular brand of router but it ought to work the same way as far as the setup.

I presume that your internet was working fine before you bought your new laptop. Unless you've done something to change it it should still be working as before.
You shouldn't need a CD - if you think about it you don't need a CD when you log in in Starbucks so why should you need one at home?
The only thing you need to know is the router's wireless name; Talktalk 12345etc, and its password - which is the password your son is using.
I can't explain why you can't connect when your son is connected - as the router should be able to host 253 laptops (very very slowly mind) - unless the router has been set with an access list that only allows his laptop to connect.
