the problem is not the backlights (ambilights). They work fine and I can turn them on and off as desired. The problem is the picture quality. It's getting dark. I can turn up the brightness setting, but that dosen't help very much.

I have a Philips flat screen TV model 37PF9631D/37. This is an "Ambilight" model. It is about 4 years old. Over the past month or two, the picture has begun to get dim (dark). The Ambilight feature works fine (I can turn it on or off as desired). What could be causing this?

Hello Paul, hi, your TV's LCD screen is powered by a back light that slowly slowly getting old/dim, until this lamp goes to off permanently, this need a replacement lamp, need also to check the inverter circuit that powers this lamp. Once replaced, the TV will go back to normal operation.

Sounds like a backlight failure. http://www.shopjimmy.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=37PF9631D%2F37 has the Ambilights from TVs of this model that were damaged in shipping (so they were only used in the factory quality control testing). The backlight usually fails slowly (while the inverter that powers them fails quickly).

These fit on the edge of the LCD panel.

(on some units the backlights are under tape sandwiched into the frame of the LCD Panel. I haven't dealt with swapping the Ambilight on this model though.)

Then I do not know the answer. In general a dimming backlight is a common LCD issue. (Symptoms of inverter failure and video board failure are no image at all.)

I wish that I could be of more help.

Philips MCW770/37 stereo will not power on any longer.

Hi ,
This is just a suggestion. Check your speaker wires at the back and at the speakers. A shorted speaker wire will cause a tripped breaker.

My tv picture is light and hard to see and will periodically shut off.its only abput 5 yrs old/

For a Philips LCD TV, that's at least two years longer than they typically last. The most common problem with Philps TVs is the power supply board, which could cause the TV to shut-down by itself. The picture being too-light could happen for several reasons. In general, a repair shop needs to figure out what's wrong.

Screen is getting darker

The most likely cause is the blue and green tubes need to have the cooling fluid changed. After many years the blue and green get clouded with algae. The red tube won't have the problem due to the red spectrum kills the algae before it has time to grow.

The way to replace the fluid for is to completely remove each CRT from the set, remove the drain plug, drain the fluid out the tube, disassemble the lens, give it a good cleaning; then reassemble; add fluid; and reinstall in set. If you check with the site www.TvRepairKits.com they are working on a kit that includes the fluid and photo instruction guide.

UNABLE TO BRIGHTEN PICTURE

Your CRT coolant needs to be changed. Thats whats giving you the dim picture. You can also clean the projection mirror on the inside this often helps. But the coolant will need to be changed to get back the bright crisp picture. Hope this helps.
