Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

When I try and start the washer, I hear about 6 clicks, then an error message "F dL" is displayed and the washer won't start. I've had a repair man out here a 1/2 a dozen times and he fixes it but then it happens again. What should I do....keep paying to have it repaired?

Hi,

I just fixed a problem like yours some few days ago,this is how i did it,enjoy it;

1.Double check that you UNPLUGGED the unit.

2.Open the top by removing 3 torx screws on back and lift off the top. Look in the back middle where all the wires connect to a CCU (central control unit).

3.Find the large blue wires along the right side of the CCU, then go immediately to the left to the first set of small black wires in a bundle of 3.

4.Just above the connector it will read DL and some # (I can’t remember the #). Jiggling the connector I realized it was simply loose and not making good contact. I removed the connector and upon inspection found the connections very clean. If yours are dirty or corroded, now would be the time to clean them.

5.Take a flashlight and look closely where the connector was connected to the CCU and you will see three metallic plates.

6.The connector has 3 sets of metallic “alligator jaws” that grip the CCU plates when installed. Note the opening between each set of “jaws”. Assuming these were only loose, I took a sharp tweezers, got under each “jaw” and lightly pushed each “jaw” toward the middle, narrowing the gap between each set of “jaws”. You will do this 6 times in total.

7.When you reinstall the clip, be gentle and jiggle slightly to be sure the part gets seated correctly and you don’t bend of the metal parts on the connector. With a secure connection, the covers reinstalled, and the washer plugged back in, the door lock mechanism engaged and the machine fired right up.

You are good to go!!

Getting fdl error message, when I try to start load, door is not locking

Hi,

"dl"indicates a door lock error. A Door Lock Error occurs if the door cannot be unlocked. It will try to lock it 6 times before displaying the error.
Check for the following when dl occurs:
  • Door Lock Mechanism broken.

  • Check Door Lock/Switch Assembly for foreign objects

  • Check Wire Harness connections to the Door Lock/Switch Assembly and Central Control Unit (CCU)

  • Door Lock/Switch Assembly Failure

My washer has an F dl problem?

Fdl is a code that indicates a door lock error. The clicking sound that you hear is most likely the door lock. This error occurs because the door cannot be locked. The door will try to lock six times before displaying the error code. You have a faulty door lock switch. Hope this helped and best wishes.

I have a whirlpool duet washer front load and its giving me a message of dl f. I can hear it trying to click but nothing happens.

This should indicate a door lock error and the clicking is the door trying to lock. The door is supposed to attempt to lock six times before the dl error is displayed. It is most likely caused by a faulty door lock switch. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Code f dl

If you already replaced the latch, and still get fdl, then the problem is wiring harness to timer board or timer board connections, check them out.

Washer DL error

F/DL is indeed a door lock error. I had this on my machine, did a lot of research and getting some idea of how it works. The code is generated when the CCU can't lock the door. Possible causes are door latch mechanism, connecting wiring, or the CCU. I could hear clicking from the CCU on my machine which indicated to me the CCU was trying to lock the door. It tries 6 times before setting the F/DL code. I tested the latch and wiring from the CCU - OK. The clicking I heard had to be relay(s) so I figured the problem was relay contact failure. I removed the CCU board, determined which relays were suspect (there are two for lock & unlock). I changed them both and saved myself spending $300 CA on a new CCU. The relays cost just over $2 each. I found replacement relays @ Electro Sonic (www.e-sonic.com; minimum $25 order plus shipping $7.50). Relay made by OMRON part # G5LE-14-DC12 replacment for original G5LE-1-VD 12VDC. I'm not impressed to have to change a $300 CCU because of a $2 relay failure. For me this was worth the try as I have some experience working with circuit boards. The relays would be a quick repair for anyone with similar experience. Hope this helps someone.
