My compaq v2000 function key seems to be not working.Pressing Fn F8/F7 to control brightness -not working but can alter screen brightness through control panel. Also scroll/number lock light not working. Keypad works fine in my compaq v5000 and swapping keyboards makes no difference as same problems persists. Could this be a motherboard problem as have recently had replacement motherboard fitted to v2000 and has only materialised since.
To check system board, connect external keyboard and see if all keys function normally. If the external works OK, check connections on laptop keyboard, making sure contacts are clean and fully seated in the ZIF socket If the external fails to function properly it is the system board. Press on the "Fn," or function, key. It is located in the bottom-left corner of the keyboard, typically next to the "Ctrl," or control, key. Do not depress it.
Press on the "F8" key, which is located in the middle of the Presario's top-most row of keys. You should now be holding down the two keys simultaneously. Small illustrations of a sun and half moon often accompany the F keys allowing you to adjust screen brightness.
Monitor the progress bar that appears on your screen as the brightness increases.
Release the two keys once you have achieved the desired brightness.
