Question about Mtd Garden

Open Question

I have an MTD Yard-Man PowerMore self-propelled lawn mower, model # 12A-44MC055. The drive belt broke and was chewed up by the blade, so I bought a new drive belt and put it on. But now, the handle that engages the drive belt dangles loosely off the mower handle. It used to be taut, but now it's loose enough to swing back and forth. It still engages the drive belt when pulled, but it's obviously not acting the way it should. Any thoughts as to how I can restore the tension in the cable / handle to make it work correctly again? Thanks!

SOURCE: Yard Machines - Won't shift into gear

The problem most likely is the shaft on which the interlock slides back and forth on inside the transmission. The yardmachines have a continous spinning shaft which ends in a bevel gear. The is an interlock plate which is connected to the Forward Reverse shift lever, this plate slides back and forth and either engages the forward gear or the backward gear. This shaft is most likely galled up, preventing everything from sliding the way it needs to. This is not a difficult thing to fix if you are somewhat mechanical. Disassemble the transmission and check if everything slides

Have a Yard Man 21"

Hi ccidb11..
I would recommend that you spray the shaft and flywheel with penetrating oil, or WD40.
Then tap the crankshaft, with the nut loosed so it acts as a flat surface to tap on with a hammer.
What you need to do is put your puller on the flywheel and tighten it down really tight, then with a hammer hit the end of the puller (where the wrench goes) a couple of times, then retighten your puller again, and hit the end again.
You will do this until the flywheel will pop off...

Self propelled feature stopped functining. I previously replaced the wheels after the gears had worn down. Now I can't get any response to engaging the self-propelled cable.

Have you checked the drive belt? There should be a belt running from the main shaft (above blade) out to the wheel drive. You didn't list model number but I'm assuming it's front wheel drive. There should be a cover over this belt so it might be hard to see from underneath. Also there should be a cover on top going to the drive transmission. If the belt is OK, check to be sure lever is moving the transmission lever.

MTD front wheel drive self-propelled 21". Self-propelled does not work. Can it be fixed?

Yes it can be fixed. Try some basics first.
1) Check under belt drive cover for excess debris
2) Belt and Idler pulley condition
3) Control cable operation
a) rusted, frozen, broken, disconnected
