Have you tried doing a System restore back to a point before this problem started occurring? If not, see if you have a restore point before this started happening. You can restore it by going to Start>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>System Restore
Please let me know if you have any questions about doing this, you will not loose any documents or files that you made during the time after the restore point and you can reverse it if it doesn't work but it is a great option to first try if your device was working before.

Can you try the scanner in another computer? if it works there that would indicate a problem with your computer.

What is the make and model of your printer?
To alleviate this error, you should reinstall PaperPort from the installation discs that came with your scanner.
Alternatively, you can download and install the latest version of Nuance Software's PaperPort (v.11) from Visioneer.
Have you installed PaperPort 11 from the Visioneer website?

Download the uninstall tool from brothers web site.Its looking for a usb connected printer instead of the network connected printer. after you run the tool wich is in the file that unzipped called rempnp and run the file called BrRempnp and choose laser/mutifuntion Led....I have an 8480dn and it worked perfect.. pick your printer and after it closes restart computer.

It has worked wonderful until I had a computer breakdown a month or so ago. Everything seems to work the same except when I go into PP
I have done exactly as they said by reinstalling my Scanner Driver.....after the second time, I am still getting the same above message..
and yes, I did uninstall first, I follow directions good.
My printer is HP DeskJet 722C. Never had a problem with this printer working with the scanner....but maybe now????
