Question about Sta Rite STA-RITE 1 HP DURA-GLAS PUMP

Open Question

I have Sta Rite 1.5 HP Model: P2RA5F-182L for my in-ground pool. I just notice that when the pump turns on, immediate this trips the breaker, the pump never begins to operate. I isolated the problem to the pump itself. The breaker has the correct Amperage rating and the pump itself by visual inspection of the electrical wiring shows no evidence of a short (The pump is 3 years old). (About 2 months ago I opened the motor to clear the impelar. When I reassembled it I kept getting a small leak when the pump was on. I tried to fix it twice but, I guess I needed to get a new seal). Could the leak me a contributor to this problem? Are the coils in the motor damaged?

SOURCE: shaft seal leaks on sta rite pump?

You need to get to the shaft at the back of the motor to hold it while you use water pump pliers or the like to turn it off. It will unscrew in the regular direction but if it has a set screw to hold it in (You will find this at the center of the impeller) this will be a left hand screw so you will go clockwise to loosen it. This should get the impeller off. If not you will need to put a screwdriver in the side of the impeller and give it a hit to lossen the impeller. Good luck.

SOURCE: Sta-Rite 1HP inground pool pump

Any time an electrical appliance trips a breaker there is only several causes:
1 - appliance is pulling more amperage than the breaker was built for.
2 - breaker is faulty
3 - a "hot" wire is touching "ground"
4 - screws (where wire is attached) in the pump or breaker are loose

1 - If the appliance is pulling more amperage than the breaker (or wiring) will allow, then check the appliance to see what amperage it's rated at. If this is more than the breaker will allow, you'll have to plug the appliance into a circuit that will take that amperage. If the appliance rating is within the limits of the wiring & breaker, then check #2, #3 or #4 above. If everything is okay with the remaining possibilities, then you have problems within the pump. Do it yourself'ers usually have a bad time when they open an electric motor. I suggest you take the motor to a electric motor repair shop or seek help from the Sta-Rite pump Customer Service.

SOURCE: Have a Sta-Rite cartridge filter that is leaking

It is probably your o-ring that needs to be replaced. These are very commonly worn in these types of pool filters. It should be part number PLM100 or PLM150 and should be fairly easy and inexpensive to find and replace.

SOURCE: I have a P2RA5F-182L Sta-rite

Contact me thru www.arrowmotor.net; we stock the part you need. To ensure you get the correct version it would be helpful if you took a digital picture so you can send it in an email.

To answer your question, yes - you could strip all the wires back and bypass the terminal board but in the long run it will make it much harder to install the part since you will need to put all new terminal ends on including a female pin style that requires a special crimper.

Installed new pump unit starts and runs for 15 minutes then trips breaker what should I check

When the pump nears the 15 minute mark, check the housing to determine whether it is running hot. Also listen for changes in pumping sounds as something may be causing restriction.

Where can a find a new pump CHEAP? Current pump is Model C48L2P104 (18 years old). Serial 1B93. Voltage 230 HP 1.5 RPM 3450/1725 Amps 9.2/2.5 Frame 48Y Dura-glas H/L

A new motor and pump parts (if needed) would be cheaper than a whole new pump. Your motor is part number UQS1152R or if you just want a single, high speed motor you could use USQ1152 to replace it. You will likely need a seal and seal insert as well; part number 100 (it may have letters in front like AS100, PS100, etc) and J3-2. A whole new pump you should shop for part #P2RA5YF-182L.

For a quote on the parts from us you can contact us using thru our website at www.arrowpools.net. Otherwise, google those numbers to locate your best deal.

I noticed that my the spa water level got really low. My pool pump is has stopped working. The breaker was tripped and I reset and it tripped again. Is the pump fried?

Probably the heater. Turn the heat off and try it. There should be a flow switch to prove pump is on before the heater works, but sometimes if you're running low, it will work intermittent. Do you know how it got low? evaporation? Is the pump leaking? If the pump is leaking, and has leaked for awhile it may have shorted out the motor. While running the pump low on water will damage the mechanical seal that keeps the water in the pump, it should not affect the motor itself.

The wire placement does not matter assuming you have a 115 volt supply with a three wire cord/cable and they are comming in as blk=hot, white=neutral and copper=ground.

Tripping a breaker would be from a shorted hot wire so look for a place where it touches the white or ground wires or the metal of the motor. Another cause would be if you really have 230V across the black and white and you connect it to a motor set for 115V. Is the breaker that turns off the circuit in question a signle wide or a double wide breaker. A double wide would be 230V.
