    Installing convergence amps?

  • abogie May 30, 2008

We have a Panasonic PT53WX42F that apparently has the same convergence problem as so many others I've been reading about--have to unplug & replug only to have unit come on for briefest flash before going back off and red light flashing 3 times. I can't tell if Panasonic sells the convergence part from their website and would also like to know what's involved in installing it ourselves.

I can tell you that if you first put some flux paste onto the pins of the chips before you remove them, then heat the flux with your solder iron to get a good flow. Then use de-solder braid to remove the solder on all the pins of the chips. Touch each pin to be sure its 100% loose, then the chips will come right out.

My new chips have not arrived yet, but I was told that you can order the chips with the -120 rather then -110 and get chips that are rated to take higher amount of current then the originals.

The 3 flash's of the power led do not necessarily indicate that these chips are your problem---the 3 flash just indicates that the system has gone into safety shut down. Many things can cause this to happen, but most often these STK chips go bad, and start to draw too much current and trigger the safety shut down.

One way to insure that the STK chips are indeed causing the 3 flash issues is to unplug the 3 convergence output lines going to the CRT boards. Do this with the power cord unplugged. Once they are off-line, power up the set. If all is well, the TV should come on and stay on and work just fine----other then the convergence will be completely WAY OFF.

If you see this result, you can be very confident in your STK's are bad and need replaced.

Get your chips from Panasonic or Pioneer if possible, they will cost about $40 each. The $7 thru $10 each off-brand ones are not as good for long-term use (from what I was told by my local tv repair guy).

Hope this is helpful.

# flashes in a panasonic means the convergence amps have failed. You will need to replace both convergence ICs numbers STK392-110 you can get replacement ICs at the following link and they include free instalation instructions with pics so you can do the repair yourself and save about 400.00 Heres the link you will need two ICs.

When i go to turn on the tv the red power light turns on and then starts flashing, with an all blank tv screen. I cant get anything but a black screen. The light will flash for a lil while, then the tv...

BLINKING RED LIGHT IS ERROR CODE.

1. Unplug set for a few minutes.

2. Plug back in and turn on.

3. When red power light starts blinking--COUNT THE BLINKS.

4. THREE BLINKS, pause, THREE BLINKS (ETC) IS SHORT PROTECTION AND A DO IT YOURSELF repair for some people. I have complete instructions for this repair.

5. 5 blinks, pause and 5 blinks etc is short on 140 volt line and while not as easy as 3 blink error code it points to places to look at.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Post a comment here when you know what error code is and I will help.

Panasonic PT-53WX42 53 in. Rear Projection Television turns on and then shuts off and then a red light starts to flash. Any help would be appreciated.

Most of these Panasonic sets have a error code---unplug the set for a minute----plug it back in and turn it on---does the red power light blink in a sequence---3 blinks, a pause and three blinks?

If it is 3,3 that is short protection and usually means one of the two convergence chips is bad.

Let me know what you find and I will be happy to help.

Panasonic pt47wx52cf tv shut off and wont turn

Please count red light flashes and let me know. There would be long pause between flashes so count pause to pause. It is an error code of TV problem.
