When u bought a new hdd, it shud not have any partition on it. but in ur case, I assume u have formatted it to ntfs but no operating system is installed in it.

If u want to make the new hdd as slave and have another old hdd as primary, that have already an operating system installed in it, then the problem shud be hdd boot priority in bios. Enter ur bios and check for hdd boot priority and put the old hdd to the top most order, then restart. this shud fix the problem.

If u installed OS in ur new hdd (win xp),
1) ntldr or ntdetect.com is missing on root dir. (c:\). If u have another computer that works and have xp installed, just put this new hdd along with the current hdd and boot to windows. Copy ntldr and ntdetect.com to your new hdd. Or another way is just repair using windows xp boot cd.
2)the windows partition is not set 'active'. to set active, boot into winxp setup and press 'r'. this will lead to recovery console. type ur passwrod for admin (def=none). use diskpart command to set active. for easy way, put the new hdd to another computer. boot to windows. rightclick my computer, choose manage. on left pane select disk manager. rightclick on ur partition, then set active.

Hope this help

I just installed a formatted samsung sv 2044d. when i try to boot up i get a message saying NTLDR is missing. i put in the windows 98 cd and nothing happens. can you tell me what is happening. ...

The drive you installed is formatted (wiped clean). It has no operating system to boot from... tthat's the NTLDR error.Power off the machine with the Win98 CD in the CD drive. Power up the machine and while the machine is POSTing (starting up showing you what's in it) watch for something saying to hit any key to boot from CD and at that point press any key . The machine should then boot from the Win98 CD and start the install

sorry for late. the massage say that mbr of ur hard diskt have problem. pls one time again give fixmbr then restart ur machine then give fixboot c: then restart ur machine. after this if a massage say that ntldr missing then copy it c: from i386 folder (windows installation cd). if problem not solve then try to reinstall windows xp by removeing all partition and then creat new partion. if their was any improtent data pls do not try to install windows xp. just remove hdd. from ur laptop then use a external harddisk casing then attached with a pc then recover data by a recoveray software( like pc instector file recovery). then delete all partitition write new mbr by using fixmbr if it fail again, then use Disk manager v10 to write mbr.

(Mbr is a record which contain master boot coad and partition table if this coad not execute properly then system can't access hdd. system halted after DMI pool data result blinking curser at black screen)

u can use microsoft diskprobe to write mbr manualy which u found in windows xp cd supprot/support.cab/diskprobe.exe
u also found it help file undr support.cab
