Would the failed convergence chips cause the screen picture to kind of roll when first turned on? Also it has black bars on each side like it's not displaying the picture completely. How much are the kits and what kit should I look for?

i replaced the convergence chips and all 12 supplied resistors carefully rechecking all my solder joints and the tv is still doing the same thing. On one video input i have a wii installed. When the wii goes into "burn-in" protection mode the picture on the tv screen is ok as in clear but dark with bowed sides. When the protection turns off the screen begins to bow concave and convex till it shuts off and does it again

Convergence is a way to far,

you may have to check for 200V line to your CRT Board

which is connected to the Flyback

Sounds like your power supply is going on you the part usually isnt too expensive but having a technician replace it may be a pain If its still under warranty I would suggest returning it but otherwise id say somewhere between 150-250 for parts and labor

hope this helps

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. The issue is with the failed convergence (STK) ICs which needs to be replaced. It’s not a difficult job if you want to do this yourself, you should require some basic knowledge about soldering-resoldering components. To start with you’ll have to open the back of the unit and then replace the ICs(STK ICs) which are located behind the black heat sink and also check theresistors as if they are short the ICs might blow again after sometime. Please check this picture:

There are repair kits available whichincludes repair instructions with the parts, if you want to do it yourself, you can buy and repair it yourself. Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Recently had same issue and after EXTENSIVE SEARCHING found all three ICs and replaced them. TV works perfectly, also, replaced convergence ICs at same time. The one 16-pin IC for the regulation ckt. is $49.95 the other 16-pin IC is $19.95 and the 8-pin opto is about $10. This price is for a minimum qty. and must have a business for quote.
