Question about Health & Beauty

1 Answer

My mon has worn hearing aids for years. Currently she has a Sonus product and is profoundly deaf due to chemo-therapy 20 years ago. Her complaint is that her entire ear hurts on the outside and the canal in the inside. She blames it on the hearing aid......so now she won't wear them at all. I see no redness, abrasions. or swelling and have brought her also to get checked by her medical doctor. We have had several appointments to get them adjusted but nothing works! Could she be rejecting them because of the product they are made of? She is not a complainer but she is already legally blind and she needs to rely on her hearing. Thanks for your help! Peg Huard

Hi, she might probably be complaining because size of the Sonus product which needs to be resized to the very minimum level so as to fit into her hears without feeling any pains. If she continues to complain after the resizing, then you definitely need ti change the product and get her a better one that will satisfy her without complaint....

My mother in law is very deaf in one ear and has poor hearing in the other. How can I tell if her own hearing is at fault or her hearing aid battery needs changing or there is some other fault causing her...

I have a similar issue with my 86 year old mother-in-law and her hearing aids. Depending on how long they are worn/turned ON, determines how long the battery in each one will last. In my mother-in-laws case, she waits to long to change the batteries or doesn't keep the volume turned up high enough. So, in her case, the battery(s) get weak, before she realizes it. The other thing that is most important is when we age our body (ears in this case) physically change and the hearing aid(s) that were originally fitted several years before, don't fit as well as they should. I am also convinced that their hearing continues to deteriorate and they should be tested and fitted with a new hearing appliance, as needed.

The down side to this, is that hearing aids are not inexpensive. So, if Medicare, Medicaid or their own private insurance want cover at least part of the cost, most people don't want to pay for new ones. Or as my mother-in-law says, "Oh, they're working alright." When in fact, they're not. My wife and I can tell by the volume on her TV. When you can hear it from one floor to another, her hearing aids aren't working right.

Squealing at random when volume is at approx 50%

Take your hearing aid to your specialist. Check on wax in your ears. Also are you near a window when the feedback occurs? Due to the phase-cancellation in hearing aids sometimes the signal bounces back and thinks it's feedback. So the hearing aid sends out it's own frequency at 180 degrees and hits it to cancel it out. If this is a false reading however the hearing aid will create its own feedback

You should let the phone ring 10 or more times to allow the Deaf or HH person enough time to see the flashing light and respond to it.
