Try attaching an external monitor to the laptop & see if you could get any display on it. If this is successful, then you might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp

The monitor screen is not bright enough to read information can I brighten or enhance? Is there a function key on the keyboard that will allow this?

Try holding the function key & tapping the Home button on keyboard:
Fn + Home - The computer display becomes brighter.

If this doesn't get it bright enough then perhaps the LCD backlight is dying. Easier to replace the whole screen than just the light.
Good luck.

The screen is almost all dark but i can some what see is there a key to brighten the screen

there should be a Fn key typically to the left of the space bar, its used in combination with a Sunshine icon key located near F10 key somewhere to adjust the screen brightness. , if you find the keys and pressing both Fn and "sunshine" do not help, you *may* have a burnt out backlight inverter on your laptop monitor. you can tell, if your windows is on the screen but there is No backlight, not dim , just no backlight.

Where is volume control and how can you brighten screen that is so dark you can barly see.

for the brightness and contrasthold down the key that says "fn" or "fcn" and push the key that looks like a sun or a light bulb, or half filled in circle.
for the volume control hold the "fn" or "fcn" key and push the key that looks like a wave ")))" or an arrow with a + next to it.
each vendor seems to use different icons, but they all mean the same thing.

Dark Screen on IBM ThinkPad R-31

try to install a vga monitor in the (db 15) Blue video conector...see if your laptop works fine...

then shoud be the inverter of your LCD that is not working anymore..the backlight is dead...that´s why the dark screen is driving you crazy!

see the model of your laptop and try to buy it on ebay..there are a lots of inverters there!

Usually, hitting the 'F7" button while holding down the 'Fn' button (function button) will brighten your screen.

Also, if you're running on battery, to conserve battery power, most notebooks will dim the screen... you can override those settings by going into the control panel and into the power settings (easiest found on the old 'classic view').

If none of that works, your video display could be starting to go bad. Let us know how you fare and we'll go from there!

Good Luck!

Hi my IBM 2635-6AU, ThinkPad 380ED 26356AU screen is dark and i cant see

From what you are stating it seems like your backlight in your lcd needs to be replaced. Plug an external monitor up to your laptop. Press the fn & f key (the one with the picture of a monitor in it.) Your diplay should project to the monitor. Display is ok.....replace the backlight.

Hope this helps you
