Should be all you need. insert the windows xp disc. select boot options when you start the computer, "boot to CD" follow through the prompts, choose new installation from the options to reformat and re-install , be aware you will need to install all the drivers and system software After you re-install windows xp. Be very aware this will destroy all data and wipe the computer . Before you do this. look for any restore prompts on the startup boot screen, like F12 to enter restore or something. sometimes laptops have restore partitions that allow you to restore to factory defaults, its much easier.

HI there,

It looks like you're good to go except you should, during rebuilding your system, go to the Dell Support Drivers & Downloads site (which they recommend), enter the service tag# for your laptop, and download and install most of your drivers from there as they will be the most recent.

Since you're using XP, you'll want to start with the XP disc and reformat and install XP first, then use your Dell Dsic that has drivers on it to install the LAN and WLAN (wired and wireless internet connection) drivers to get on the net and go to the Dell site.

I usually make a folder on the desktop and name it Drivers, then while at the Dell site dowload each driver, BIOS update, application, etc. to that folder so I can work directly from the driver files without constantly reconnecting to the Dell site every time I have to restart after a driver install that requires it.

Good Luck

My DEll D505 has the blue screen of death which says unmountable boot volume and I do not have the reset disc. I do no know what to do. Please Help...

In that case borrow an Windows install disk from a friend and using your own key reinstall with it. After that you will have to install the drivers yourself. You can download them from here

How do you reset the latitude d505 to factory settings

How to reset the latitude d505 to factory settings:

If you have Windows XP,

Step 1: Backup everything that is important to you.
Step 2: Boot your computer using the Windows installable CD.
Step 3: Format your harddisk or repartition it.
Step 4: Install Windows XP using the installable CD.

Don't try this if you are not sure of what you are doing. It won't damage your laptop, but you might require a long time to get your laptop working again.

How do i reset my dell latitude d620 to factory settings

Resetting a Dell Latitude to the factory settings allows the user to restore the Dell Latitude to the original operating condition as if it was just taken out of the box. Dell system includes a restore utility called 'Dell Symantec System Restore' to reset or restore your Dell system to factory setting.

Step 2: Remove any other unnecessary external drive and restart your Dell Inspiron laptop.

Step 3: Press 'F8' key continue until 'Advanced Boot Options' wouldn't be appear.

Step 4: Use your keyboard arrow key to select 'Repair Your Computer' from the list and hit 'Enter'.

Step 5: Now click 'Next' and login as the administrator account.

Step 6: Click 'Dell Factory Image Recovery and Data Safe options', select your language option and click 'Next'.

Step 7: Click the check box 'Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition' and click 'Next' to start Dell Latitude reset process...

Download the latest drivers for your Dell Latitude D505 off the dell website or try enabling sound in your operating systems control panel.

I said "Operating Systems control panel" because you did not mention what operating system you have.

Dell "Drivers and Utilities" CD

Hi, the "No Diagnostic Utility Partition Found" is returned because your laptop does not find the recovery partition on C drive.
Easiest way to create partition is with dell recovery cd. You can buy CDs from dell, buy finding contact on web site or buy from one of the following.
Dell Restore Disk: XP Pro SP2 for ... $35.00 - DIMOSOL - Digital ...
Dell Latitude D600 XP System Recovery CD ... $18.95 - recovery-cds.com ...
Dell Latitude D600 Vista System Recovery ... $18.95 - recovery-cds.com ...

Buy recovery cd according to windows version on sticker at the back of your laptop.
With recovery CD you wont need drivers.

Alternative solution is downloading drivers posted by Maanita after installing Windows from a generic Windows setup CD.
