Question about Hunter 23918 Classic Original Iron Fan

2 Answers

I have 52 inch Hunter Classic fan. With no power on blades spin freely in either direction. However when I turn power on motor strains and blades become hard to turn in either direction. Fan will run if I give it a push to get going but is slow and can hear motor strain. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the motor slow and fast speed windings are energized at the same time. This can be caused by a bad switch. Is this a new install or a used unit? The switch can be replace easily and very cheaply. If you have an ohmmeter you can check the resistance from common to the low and high speed connections. You should only be able to read through either one then pull the cord to change speed and be able to read through the other. When it is off you shouldn't be able to read through either. Hope this helps.

I think you are just going to need a new switch.

The fan motor internal coil/windings are weak and near to faulty.Check the voltages of the motor and its connections. This will confirm either its motor fault or short in connections causing this problem. In meter the volt will show 120.
Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Why don't fan blades rotate?

Sadly Hunter doesn't want people dismantling their stuff and replacing broken or burnt out pieces. They'd rather you buy a new one. If the motor has burned out which is possible a solution depending on how handy you are is simply hunt down a similar replacement and reconnect it.

Make sure the new motor has the exact same leads and connectors as the old one had as some Hunter fans have more than two leads. The model I have has four leads: a black, a white, a green and a red as my model has integrated lighting controls by passed by the motor.

I bought a simple blower motor with the same rating only two wires and with a bit of solder and wire I hooked up the motor and lights separately. The new motor is much faster than the older one so I had to add a tiny 1-way 500 watt dimmer switch to manually turn down the speed.

A customer of mine has a very nice Hunter original ceiling fan that she never oiled and now the fan just hums and wont spin. Is it possible to repair after no oil damage is done?

Put some oil in and turn blades by hand to lubricate the bearings. If the motor is frozen, then you would have to take it to a service center or send back to Hunter for repair.

We got 4 HUNTER ceilin fans in one room. Model 27185-060 with remote FCC ID:IN2TX11 Two of them are runing clocwise another two in opsite side Wat can we do to run all in one direction?

Your Hunter ceiling fan is equipped with a small switch that changes the spin of the blades from clockwise to counter-clockwise. Regardless of the make or model of your ceiling fan, this switch is typically located on the center motor housing where the fan blades are attached. good-day!

Have an expensive Hunter indoor/outdoor pedestal Fan that stopped working. It just "hums" and does not turn. Please help.

With the fan UNPLUGGED, try to spin the fan blade with a pencil or something that will fit through the blade cage.

If the blade spins easily, there is an electronic problem (control or motor) that must be serviced.

If the fan blade is stuck or very hard to move, the shaft and bearing are probably dirty and need to be cleaned. You can temporarily fix this with a tiny amount (a drop) of WD-40 applied to the shaft where it enters the motor. Spin the blade manually to work the oil into the bearing. If the motor spins freely, the dirty bearing condition is verified. To properly clean the shaft and bearings, the motor must be disassembled.

Remote control works the light on my Hunter ceiling fan but blades do not move

Can you hear the motor run even though the blades are not turning? If so, the manifold/flywheel may be bad and perhaps have broken away from the motor shaft.

Howdy,

Assuming these ceiling fans are infact the 23827 Hunter Original, did you put the bottle of oil which came with the fan in them? The Hunter original requires this bottle of oil for lubrication. If you had them installed, the installer may have not put the oil in.

with the motor/s off, spin the blades. Do they spin for a long time, or do they come to a stop quickly? If these fans were just installed, the biggest likelyhood is that the bearings are seizing from lack of lubrication.

The oil hole may be on the switch housing, as in this .pdf http://www.hunterfan.com/uploadedFiles/Support/Owner_Manuals/41556.pdf

Or it may be on top of the fan, as in this .pdf http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfimages/52/527f2153-5314-45aa-8cd1-310b94adc671.pdf

Keep poping the breaker on instllation

Check your wiring for short circuits. If you turn the switch on and it pops it may be in the switch box or up in the fan box. Also make sure the fan blades spin freely. A motor overload or short circuit would be the only reason for the breaker tripping immediately.
