A capacitor that stores extra power to run certain circuitry in your camera has gone bad. Capacitors holds extra current needed for the screen, motor drives and such in all cameras. To repair it outweighs to cost of a new replacement. The capacitor is part of the circuitry so a complete circuit board will be needed

You could try another USB port. I've had USB ports get loosened up on me without me realizing it. If nothing else has changed, I'd suggest trying to connect with a different USB port, OR swapping out your camera connection cable. The cable might be bad, usually from being pulled on so much.

My mac wont recognise the usb when i plu g it in

Make sure after you plug in the camera that you turn it on.

If it still doesn't read try downloading the Software Suite for Coolpix for Mac.

Still problems then try another USB port on your laptop, or try it on another just to be sure its working properly.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.

Try and find the camera in the file manager.
Try a different computer. You might need a picture programme

Check by plugging it into the other USB Port, sometimes a port refresh helps, Some times if you start up your mac with the camera plugged in it only thinks it has a drive there...swap to the other drive and wait to see if it is recognised, you can also open drive utility and look for it there as a Plug in Drive... this may help as it may show up there unmounted, if so then click the Mount Button. ...C
