Please check that your computer meets (and exceeds) the system requirements:

Windows XP Home Edition/Professional/Media Center Edition

    • 300 MHz or faster processor

    • 256 MB of RAM

    • 350 MB of available hard disk space

    • DVD or CD-ROM drive required for all installations

    Windows Vista™ Home/Home Premium/Ultimate/Business/Starter Edition

    • 1 GHz or higher processor

    • 512 MB RAM

    • 350 MB of available hard disk space

    • DVD or CD-ROM drive required for all installations
Norton is a huge program that has a tendency to lag computers if they are not fully capable of providing the power for it.

Also, can you open your task manager (right-click the taskbar and goto task manager) and find out the file that is causing high CPU usage?

There are many free anti-virus programs as well. You might try doing a search for "Free anti-virus reviews" in google

Hi,

That is usually the case. Norton eats up a lot of resources. If it is slowing the computer too much, either uninstall it, turn off real time protection or get more RAM for your PC.

What the disadvantages of norton antivirus and what are the performance norton antivirus

Norton may slow down the performance of your computer, and it is a paid software what i think is instead of going with this you can download any of these free software (avg, avast or avaira) they all are free for one year and do the same thing what norton does without slowing down your computer.

You are caught between a rock and a hard place.

Norton, and ALL security software use a fair amount of resources. They are there to protect you.

You cannot expect a good and constant monitoring program to be light, unless you use a low quality security program that is near useless.

I wish these programs were also smaller, but with today's severe threats, we need severe protection.

Please put up with Norton or you may download free security programs which are excellent from this link: -

a generic fix-all for slow computers is:
add RAM, Defragment your Hard drive and make sure you are using a stable OS (i wouldn't recommend Vista).

AVG free edition should do the trick, but the safest way to get rid of a virus is reformatting your hard drive.

In my experience Norton can become flakey at times. Make sure your subscription to norton has not expired. Otherwise try un-installing norton and re-installing it. Part of it may have become corrupted.
