Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Upgrade of the hard drive

I bought the PS3 the day it came out but could only get the 20GB version. With today's games taking up so much space I've maxed out already. Besides deleting games I still play I wanted to get a new hard drive for it. Problem is that no one at best buy, gamestop, circuit city, or any computer place can give me a straight answer. I really don't want to buy another PS3 that has a bigger storage space so if anyone knows please let me know what types are compatible and what not. Thank you

NOTE: Your external HDD MUST have a external power source, it cannot be DUAL USB.
NOTE: ATA (LAPTOP) 2.5" EXTERNAL HDD's will not WORK on PS3!

Making sure the HDD is FAT32
Remember, the PS3 external drive must be FAT32 formatted, usually if your buying a store packed
external HDD it already is, but if your making your own you might have to follow a few extra steps in
order to make it FAT32 and PS3 compatible.
Once your external hard drive is connected to your computer:
Go to START
CONTROL PANEL
ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS
COMPUTER MANAGEMENT
Select DISK MANAGER on the left hand side options.
Select the external drive and read the "File System" type. If it says "NTFS", right click the disk
and select "Delete Partition".
Now you must partition your HDD to FAT32, unfortunately Windows XP does not do this itself, so we
need to use a few tools to help us.
Symantec Disk Checker is a great solution to go for, but if you don't want to 'buy' the software, you can
always download a few freeware that work equally as well.

It's really easy to upgrade your drive. It's removable with one screw, and you take that drive with you to your electronics store, and get a bigger one that's the same physical size and plug-ins. Then just switch over the metal housing around the drive (4 phillips screws), stick it back in your PS3, and turn it on. The PS3 will auto-format the drive for you.

You cant really get a PS3 Hard Drive because Sony made their own Hard Drives so i think your gonna have to Contact them asking for a PS3 Hard Drive and i think you should really delete some Games like Demos you downloaded cause those Demos take up atleast 500 mbs each or more.

Have a 12gb PS3. Why does it indicate not enough memory?

You need storage, not memory. Memory clears out every time your turn the device off.

Can i add extra memory storage to my 12gb ps3 system?

Yes, you can upgrade your Hard drive (HDD) very easy. There are a few things you will need. First, a big enough memory stick/thumb drive. It has to be big enough to hold your saved games, videos, music, etc. Remember, purchased games can be downloaded again for free from your transaction history. So you don't need to worry about those. Make sure it is a thumb drive that doesn't have anything you might want to save on it. If there is, back it up first on your PC. Here is a youtube vid that will take you through the rest. You can go with as much storage space as you can afford! It has a 12Gb now, you can replace it with a 1TB or Tera-bite. Witch is actually 1,000gb.(There's your space) ^^ PS. I know the version you have is the "SUPER SLIM" because they never brought out a 12gb version in any of the others.

I bought a new hard drive because mine was corrupted i plugged the hard drive into my pc and formatted it to fat32 plugged it into my ps3 and it says i need to upgrade my storage media to 3.50 or higher ...

You have put the file into an incorrect folder. The folders must be all caps and rather than saying 'upgrade' as you wrote, it must say "UPDATE"

Remember: ALL CAPS.

My ps3 with a 80 gig hard drive wont allow me to save more than 2 or three games .when i try to load a fourth game it says theres not enough space on the hard drive to save game and ive tried several...

Certain games copy gigs and gigs of data over during first install to speed up game play, otherwise you would be waiting forever for certain games to load.

GTA and Metal Gear take up a ton of space.

The best solution for you is to get an external FAT32 usb drive with at least 80gb of free space on it, backup your PS3 to it, and then upgrade your hard drive to a 250gb or 320gb SATA drive from Best Buy. They're going for $49.99 and below so it's a cost effective upgrade.

Once you've got the new drive swapped in you just have to follow the on screen prompts and RESTORE your PS3 from the backup you created earlier and you are good to go ;)

The link below has the instructions on how to remove your hard drive from your PS3.

Note if you are wanting to upgrade the hard drive on your PS3 and you have unit with the drive bigger than 20GB I would recommend that you get an external drive to put your saves and data files on. The reason for this that the PS3 encrypts the data so if your PS3 dies you will not be able to recover your save files.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

I HAVE BOUGHT MY SON AN XBOX 360 BUT IT ONLY HAS 256MB OF RAM. CAN I UPGRADE THIS WITH ANY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE OR DOES IT HAVE TO BE ONE SPECIFIC TO XBOX

Ram and Harddisk space are two different things. You can not upgrade the ram in the 360, but you can add a Harddrive to it.
It does have to be a 360 hard drive though, all the retailers that sell the console should also sell these.

Ps3 hard drive

New hard drive on the system what size hd do you have? I can get you a good deal on a sony hard drive, If you dont know how to pull the hard drive out check the manual it should show you. (go to an electronic store and tell them you want to upgrade your ps3 hd and they can guide you to 20gb hds to 250gb just for the ps3)
Let me know your progress, Should not be to much 60gb is about 50$ better then 150 via sony!
If you dont want to bother with it let me know I do purchase these systems and can get you a new/used one cheap!
