Hi, I have a Panasonic microwave model NN-S543BFR. I have the same problem. It starts for 3 seconds with a zapping sound 3 times (burning smell) and it shuts off. Have had it a couple years and it has worked great..until now. I noticed a spark at the windings of the HV Inverter each of the 3 times. Want to be completely sure it is the inverter and not something else like the magnatron that may be causing that to happen. Please let me know.

Hey all, I fixed my microwave by ordering and replacing the faulty circuitry. It was easy, it was all on one circuit card. been a couple years now and it has been working great. The new part has a slightly different part number so I suppose that means they fixed whatever was faulty to begin with. Sorry I took so long to post. It cost me about $80.00 but this is an awesome microwave so it was worth it.

The microwave makes a loud "hum or buzz" noise but will not heat up the food My microwave is running and sounds like it is working but will not heat up anything.

Hi, Your hi-voltage system has gone bad. The noise you are hearing is the hi-voltage transformer. This has taken the magnetron which does the heating out. The magnetron has a 5 year warranty on it, the rest of these parts only have a year on them. Contact your nearest repair center. Thanks,

Microwave heats intermittently

Doug, not not attempt repairs on your m/wave unless you have had training.
When you take off the cover even with the plug turned off, their is still charge inside the m/wave which could kill you!
sounds like the magnetron may be faulty, get your approved engineers to carry out a' power check' on the magnetron etc,

Turns on but not heating food sounds a bit louder

Hi, this is common in most microwaves. this abnormal noise is coming from a faulty Magnetron. this device is responsible for the heating process and, it is damaged and not heating at all at this point.Simply replace the Magnetron and, this unit will start to heat once more.

Was using it last night to heat something up. When almost done, microwave made a zizt type of sound and went off. I turned it back on and it continued cooking, but I started smelling burned plastic or

More common then you think, i have gone through a couple microwaves in the last ten years, they both failed very similar to what you describe. One popped the breaker one day, reset the breaker and it worked again but had an odd smell to it. I took it apart and couldn't find anything burnt or melted so i tossed it and got a new one, i didn't want a microwave burning the house down! I would suggest unless your really tied to that microwave that you just replace it for safety sake. Four years or forty years old don't matter anymore, i had one microwave, LG brand, that died two months after the warranty expired and it would cost more to repair it then replace the thing!

Microwave does not heat/cook

power spikes are very damaging to a microwaves internal parts, it sounds like your transformer and/or magnetron are blown. if the unit is out of warranty I would recommend calling a repairman or getting a new microwave (the transformer & magnetron are expensive and dangerous to work on) also get a small single plug surge protector for the new one.
