Question about Digital Cameras

1 Answer

Looking for tips to clean a very dusty Canon EOS 350D I've just boughtoff eBay. The view through the viewfinder is very dirty with a couple of black spots and some dust and small hairs etc. The pictures themselves are clear so the sensor is fine, it is the opaque plastic bit through which the mirror reflects which needs a clean. This is the part with the seven little squares where the focus LEDs light. Also one of those LEDs (the leftmost) is not working and the next nearest ones are dimmer than the rest. Sounds like a Canon service job or are there any checks I should make first?

I've spent a fair amount of time looking around for a solution to this, and have come up with the following: -

The "plastic bit" in question is called the focussing screen and has an official Canon part number of YN2-3472.

It is held in by a clip and can be fairly easily removed - see the following site (in Japanese - try a translation via babelfish as traditional chinese) http://www.focusingscreen.com/work/400d....

If it is incorrectly seated it can cause the missing and dim focus lights issue, so I will attempt to remove, clean and reseat. If the worst comes to the worst, a replacement has a list price of just $2.50 from Canon USA!!

There are also 3rd party replacements which offer the split focus centre circle of manual SLRs (but lose the focus lights completely). These can be expensive however.

Hope this helps others in my predicament!

If you know how to get the lens out, then it shouldn't be too difficult to clean it, but it is tricky. Having it serviced would be the best option. However, if the pictures are clear, i wouldn't bother much, as giving it for servicing would probably end up costing more than the price you paid for the camera!

Cheers!

Turn on preview

The Digital Rebel XT operates as SLRs have operated for half a century. You view through the viewfinder to take a picture. Only the more recent dSLRs have a Live View capability which lets you use the screen on the back instead of the viewfinder.

Canon rebel xt 1. image looks blury in eye

1. The viewfinder's diopter is probably out of focus (doesn't affect Auto Focus of photos). There's a dial and a +/- symbol next to the viewfinder. Turn the dial till you can see clearly through it. Alternative reason: The glass in the viewfinder is dirty/foggy. Use camera cleaning solution (a drop) on a cotton bud to clean it.

2. Malfunction needs Canon Service Centre to take a look at.

How can you use the LCD screen in lieu of looking through the view finder to take pictures. This is for a Canon EOS Rebel XT.

Im afraid your camera does not have live view so therefore you will have to use the viewfinder to take your images and view them back on the lcd screen.

The LCD does not come on when camera is turned on. How do I fix this.

The EOS 350D does not have a Live View function like the compact point and shoot cameras (Panasonic Lumix, Powershot, IXUS etc). You need to look through the viewfinder to compose your shot. The LCD only displays menu settings and images you have already captured (Play Button). Later models of EOS D-SLRs come with Live View but still doesn't have auto focus and you have to focus manually (eg EOS 450D, EOS 40D, etc)

How do I have the viewfinder image show in the LCD display

The EOS 350D doesn't have that function (Live View). You need to shoot with the viewfinder. Only later models of D-SLRs have Live View functions (EOS 500D, 50D, 40D, etc). You can however, playback your captured shots by pressing the "Play" button

The 350D does not have this option. The Canon "Live View" option is only available on Canon DSLRs that came out in 2007 or later.

Black viewfinder and screen

Most likely it is a mechanical failure such that the reflection mirror does not return back to its normal position, then blocking any light to the viewfinder.

Check this by unmounting the lens. If so, you may have to consider a repair operation.
