When I close the lid, the monitor goes out, but when I reopen the lid, it does not come back on. I have to press the power key, to put it into standby, then press the power key again to come out of standby, and the monitor comes back on. When the monitor goes out with the lid closed, I think the hard drive is still active, which is what I want, because I do a lot of remote access, and need it to run with the lid closed.
Under the power saving options in the control panel you can have the laptop set up the way you want...under the advanced settings you can select when i close the lid "do nothing"

Unfortunately, you're not going to be able to get a new cable as Toshiba will not sell OEM replacement parts to anyone but an authorized repair center.
This may just as likely be a problem with the sockets/plugs as with the cable itself, as they are rather fragile. It may be worth spending a few bucks for a used cable just to see if it will solve your problem. Also be sure that the thin plastic shim found on the top of most of these cable ends is still there, as they can come off rather easily, and the lack of it will cause a poor connection.
Your other alternatives are (1) Toshiba repair center, or (2) using the external monitor.
You appear to be cloning your internal LCD and as long as it is active, the resolution setting for the LCD is also controlling the resolution of the external monitor. When the LCD is closed, then the default resolution of the external monitor is being used by Windows 7 (It apparently has autodetected the size of the monitor and knows the Highest optimal resolution it will display.) The higher the resolution, then smaller the icons.
To resolve, go to display properties and check the resolution of the internal LCD and then set the External display to the lower resolution.
You should be able to wake the system with an external keyboard, by pressing the spacebar, if the system is sleeping
If you see a very faint image at the laptop's LCD screen, it is possible that the Laptop's LCD lid close switch is stuck in the closed position.
In this mode the back-light stays off, even with the LCD lid open. This is to conserve power when the laptop is ON with the LID closed.
Check the LCD lid close switch. It is a small plastic pin located close to the back LCD hinges. Try tapping the lid switch a few times to see if you can turn on the screen back-light. If that does not help, then I would suggest to replace the FL inverter board.
Most laptops go into standby mode when the lid is closed. To stop this, (Windows XP) click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Power Options, then click on the Advanced tab, select "Do nothing" in the drop-down for "When I close the lid of my portable computer"
ok go into control panel.double click display.in display properties click on screensaver;then click on power.in power options properties select never in all the fields.then click advanced and select options in power buttons.e.g. when i close the lid on my laptop select do nothing.same for sleep button(hybernate)...
If your system won't display anything w/o the external monitor. there's something wrong with the LCD's backlight. you may have to contact your laptop's manufacturer and check if this laptop is still under warranty. you may have to get the lcd replaced.
open up the Nvidia control panel and identify monitors. Then run the multiple display wizard that should help you get both monitors working. or Move application window to the monitor you want it to be displayed on, close he application and reopen it. hope this was somewhat helpful. Good luck!!
