Hi, sounds like the clutch. If you feel confident you can strip the mechanism down, clean and replace, otherwise its a new clutch.

I have a John Deere 355d lawn tractor. Every time I engage blade or release brakes the mower dies out. Checked safety seat switch and its not that.

Try pulling up on your PTO switch to engage the RIO switch. If it works then there is a problem with the reverse switch is located near the directional pedals/linkage or on the transmission. Attached is a picture of the switch from the John Deere parts catalog and a wiring diagram.

There are several safety switches such as under the seat, blade engagement, neutral switch....all must be in working order and the lever in the proper position to get fire to the starter.

When engaging mower engine stals

Safety switch to the lever that allows you to engage the blades is bad you can make a small jumper wires to by pass the switch. Unplug the connection .then insert two jumper wires into the plug .where your two white wires .insert jumper wire ends then two purple wires the same way with jumper wire.then start mower if it dies whenever you try to engage the blades switch 2 ends and replace a flat fuse.for it will have blown.you should be good after that.

John deere gt 235 electric blade engagment but mower dies when you try to engage

One of two possible causes;either the PTO switch is defective or the switch for the reverse peddle is out of adjustment .The only other thing i have seen cause the PTO to shut down is a lack of battery power due to the machine not charging.

Blades wont engage on a john deer riding mower

May be a safety switch not letting the PTO engage the clutch? Also check your voltage at the battery...too low a voltage won't let the clutch engage either. Should be between 13.3-14v at full throttle.
