Question about AEG Vacuums

1 Answer

I have a Brookstone Wet/Dry handheld vacuum. When I toggle the switch on or off, nothing happens. If I leave it on the charger and do this, nothing happens (so I don't think it's the battery). It seems like it's a few years old, but I can't be sure as I got it for free from someone's yard sale leftovers. They didn't have an option for "Brookstone" in the product selection, so I just chose the first one.

Hi Caraffe! I might be able to help you a little with your Vac. Lisa Allen said that you have the same model, a BROOKSTONE WET/DRY VAC SKU#411884, which is what I have with NO MANUAL or CHARGER. So, with your info and my info, here I go...
NOTE: Mine has a BLUE LIGHT right in front of the POWER SWITCH and a WHITE LIGHT (a FLASHLIGHT) right in front of the FILTER RELEASE SWITCH. When I slide the POWER SWITCH ON, BOTH the BLUE LIGHT and the WHITE LIGHT illuminate simultaneously. Meaning, my BATTERY is POWERING the unit. Since, I don't have a CHARGER, I can't respond to whether one or both of the lights will or will not be illuminated while the unit is plugged into the CHARGER and is actually being CHARGED.
    1) FIRST SCENARIO: When you say,"Nothing happens", do you mean the BLUE LIGHT and the WHITE LIGHT don't go on when you toggle the POWER SWITCH? If so, then it looks like you have NO POWER to the unit. (Since on mine, the BLUE and WHITE LIGHTS go on when the unit is turned ON.) This would lead me to believe that your BATTERY is NOT CHARGED. And,that possibly it is INCAPABLE of TAKING and/or HOLDING a CHARGE. Since, you got the unit from a yard sale,(where we sell the things we don't use anymore), then the unit has probably been just lying around and has not been used lately. If so, the BATTERY has probably LOST it's CHARGE. If you leave a BATTERY UNCHARGED for a long period of time, the BATTERY will EVENTUALLY DIE and it is possible that the BATTERY MAY NEVER RECOVER and thus, it may NEVER BE CAPABLE of TAKING and/or HOLDING a CHARGE again.
    2) SECOND SCENARIO: If, as you say, "Nothing happens", when toggling the POWER SWITCH on while the unit is being charged or not being charged, (I take "Nothing happens" as meaning, neither the BLUE or the WHITE LIGHT go on), then there is also the possibility that the BATTERY is GOOD and the POWER SWITCH has gone BAD. As, the POWER SWITCH is what should be turning both the BLUE and the WHITE LIGHT on.
    3) TEST: If you or a friend has a MULTIMETER, then check the BATTERY: See if it HAS a CHARGE and also HOW MUCH of a CHARGE the BATTERY HAS as well as, HOW MUCH of a CHARGE it WILL HOLD. Maybe you have a dead or very weak BATTERY. And, it can't hold enough of a CHARGE to even turn the unit on. If so, then you need to buy a NEW BATTERY.
    4) HELPFUL TIP: When charging the unit, leave it charging for at least 10 hours or even overnight. THEN try your POWER SWITCH. It can take that long for a BATTERY to TAKE the FULL CHARGE and operate correctly.
    5) NOW FOR MY PROBLEM: NO MANUAL, NO CHARGER and when I turn my unit on, even though the BLUE and WHITE LIGHTS go on, it makes no sounds, no noise and does absolutely nothing.
If you would be so kind and look on YOUR CHARGER for me. I need the following info: The MAKE and MODEL#, as well as, the OUTPUT: the VOLTAGE, is the CHARGER AC or DC and the AMPS that it lists. I would greatly appreciate it. Good Luck with your vac.
P.S. ~~Not all vacs operate the same. For ours, the BLUE and WHITE LIGHTS go on when the unit is ON.
~~I also have a GATOR DIRT DEVIL BD10100 handheld vac. It has a small RED LIGHT right in front of the POWER SWITCH.
~~But, it ONLY goes on when I plug it into the CHARGER and the unit is actually CHARGING.
~~When I unplug it from the charger, the RED LIGHT immediately goes off.
~~If, I then turn the DIRT DEVIL on, the RED LIGHT still remains OFF. Even if, the DIRT DEVIL is plugged into the CHARGER and is being CHARGED (the RED LIGHT is on, right!) ~~But, if I turn the unit on while still being plugged into the CHARGER, the RED LIGHT goes OFF.
~~So, for this DIRT DEVIL vac, the illuminated RED LIGHT by the POWER BUTTON is not a LIGHT to indicate that the POWER is ON, but rather, it is ONLY a RED LIGHT to tell the consumer that the unit is plugged into the CHARGER and that the unit is being CHARGED.
I'm curious to see what LIGHTS will go on when I actually get to plug my BROOKSTONE WET/DRY VAC into a CHARGER. You'd think that at least the BLUE LIGHT would have to illuminate. Otherwise, how would you know if the unit is in CHARGING MODE and being CHARGED?
Looking forward to hearing from you. Denise :)

I realize this is an old post, but I also picked up the same item & have the same problem. Anyone know the fix? It's a Brookstone SKU#411884. I purchased it in an auction, brand new in the box. The filter is clean and shows no sign of previous use. HELP I WANT TO USE IT! I'VE LOOKED ALL OVER THE WEB & CAN'T FIND THE PRODUCT ANYWHERE. :(

Lisa Allen, I also have a Brookstone Wet/Dry Vac Sku#411884. I believe I bought it at an auction. It came with no manual or charger. I have searched the web and can find really no info on it, except, that these vacuums don't seem to work. It has two grey buttons, one is the Filter Release Button and the other one you push forward to obviously turn it on. Funny thing, the second button has no wording like "ON" or "OFF". I guess they were cutting corners when they made it. (hahaha) Any hoot, when I push it forward, a blue light comes on right in front of it. Obviously again, to show you it's on. Also, a little white light comes on in front of the Filter Release Button. Someone was using their thinking cap. Aha...a flashlight. But, that's all it does. The thing makes no noise or sound of any kind. Since yours was brand new in the box, I'm hoping you can tell me the make and model# of the charger. Or, at the very least, the OUTPUT: the voltage, is the charger AC or DC and the amps. I don't want to fry it's little brain by plugging it into the wrong type of charger. Thanks so much for your help. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Denise :)

My Electrolux Rapido wet&dry won't start. The battery is empty and the blue light flashes when I plug in the charger.

this sounds totally silly but is the power button on the vacuum actually off? Had the same problem, where the battery was completely empty i didn't know my son had switched the vacuum on put it on charge and the light was flashing. I took it off the charging stand pressed the power button then put it charging perfectly. Anyone who doesnt have this appliance will think you sound stupid but its just a clicky button so visually the button looks the same on or off.

I have a Craftsman wet dry vac with blower capability (22 L). While I was using it to **** up water, the water came out of the blower hose. Now I can't get it to work as a vacuum. What can I do to fix...

Most wet dry vacs have a ball float that blocks the vacuum when it is full of liquid. Yours sounds as if it is full or the ball has gotten stuck in the up, or blocking position.

Vacuum shut off and will not turn on again. What could be wrong?.

Your switch died, it happens a lot with this brand of shopvac. Just extract the little switch behind the big rocker switch and replace it with one from radio shack, or replace it with a toggle switch. Cheap and easy to do.

I have a shopvac model#86776-24. The toggle switch went bad and I'm looking for a replacement switch

I got a replacement switch at a local electronic supply store: Philmore Miniature Rocker Switch part number 30-043. Shop vac changed the switch recently to two push buttons from the old rocker style. This update works a lot better.

Charging Black & Decker Dustbuster

Leave it in the charger for at least 7 hours and then try and see if it works on a full performance time of roughly 3 minutes.
