I can't even get to the password window - when i try to connect to my netgeat wgr614v7 router which appears on the connections list, it always fails to connect to anything (saying the router is out of range or something, even if the router's in the same room) - my other roomate is able to connect through the router on a different laptop. we are using wpa2 protection

With the router powered on, use a pen or paper clip to hold the "Reset" button for at least 10 seconds, this will reset the router to default settings and you can start over with setting your encryption protocols. Make sure to note the WEP/WAP key you assign.

This guide gives you the directions for setting up wireless on the Netgear WGR614v7.
Basically enter the routers ip address (192.168.1.1) in your browser. If you router has default configurations, then enter the username as "admin" and the password as "password." Navigate to "wireless settings" and then on that page you configure your network.
You can reset the Netgear back to the default settings by - Power up the Netgear and press and hold the RESET bitton at the back of the Netgeat for approx. 10 secs until the LEDs flash, then release the RESET button. What is your operating system (Vista/XP, older Windows)? Have you turned on the router's wireless router radio from the computer that is connecting? (Login to the router's setup page at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (depending on the router) and go to Advanced menu and click Wireless Settings.) While you are there, enable the SSID Broadcast (another checkbox hust below the one for Wireless Router Radio). Now check if your laptop can see the router.
