Installing belt on a john deere 62C deck. I installed a new belt, and it seems to slip, when mowing. The old belt didn't slip. I have the writing on the belt, facing outside. Should it be facing inward? Or could the belt pulleys be worn out, and that is why it is slipping. I bought the new belt from a John Deere dealer, so I think it is the correct belt.

Thank you! You are the only one that was able to give me that diagram and instructions. I will check to see if I put the belt on wrong. Otherwise I don't know why the belt would be slipping. Please let me know if you think there is a possibility that belt could slip, because of worn pulleys. The pulleys do look like they are worn, where they contact the belt. The machine does have over 700 hours on it. Thanks again.

No writing on the outside is correct ,i think you just have the wrong belt ,take both belts back to dealer and get them to measure them for you ,TIP when buying spares always go with old part in hand as even with chassis number you can end up with the wrong piece like this ,trust me i never go to auto factor without old piece in my hand

You can make sure the belt is correctly installed by viewing this link and you should also check the idler pulley for correct tension

It could be worn pulleys allowing the belt to slip but the idler pulley usually takes care of that and hold the belt tight to prevent it from slipping.

If the idler pulley is making it slip, would that be because the spring is worn out? Thanks.

The writing on the belt should be facing outside. The V notch on the belt is what contacts the V on the power pulleys. Comparing the old belts length to the new belts length would verify they gave you the correct length. And if the new belt is the correct length, verify the belt routing and inspect and tension pulleys that may have a broken tension spring. You should also have a belt routing decal on the deck itself. The old belt worked and the mower was fine, so belt routing would be a place to start.

How to adjust tension on belt of John Deere Ride On D140

How to adjusted Cutting Deck Belt Tension

You do not say which size cutting deck you have. I will be writing about the 48", 3 blade cutting deck

The belt on this deck is self tensioned. The tension is provided by a spring attached to a moveable pulley on the deck. When the belt is in place you can manually force this pulley forward/backward and it will release the tension.

If the belt is off track, place the belt back around all the pulleys in the correct path, lastly force this spring loaded pulley forward/backward (depending on your deck, the direction is not important, the tension is) to get the belt around the pulley. If the belt is placed correctly, when you release the spring loaded pulley it will properly tension the belt.

Typically, these belts should not be jumping off. If yours is coming off frequently the belt may be worn. When they wear they get quite a bit longer, then the tension pulley cannot apply the correct tension. Rarely does the tension spring have to be replaced.

The other problem that causes belt jumping is worn spindles and stationary pulleys. The spindles are the most likely to need replacement. You can buy excellent replacements for JD spindles on Amazon for very reasonable prices. The following spindles are super replacement spindles for the 48" deck. They may very well be the same for smaller and larger decks; I have not researched that. Just search Amazon for Silver Streak # 285851.

Silver Streak # 285851 Spindle Assembly for JOHN DEERE GY21098, JOHN DEERE GY20962,

Product description:

You can also find replacements for the flat pulleys on Amazon. If you cannot find what you need there, go to http://www.greenpartstore.com//

Installing mower belt

The pulley at a wierd angle is the tension pulley. You may get the manual on line for free if you are lucky but not all mower manufacturers are that generous. What kind of mower do u have?
