I am also adding a desktop (with Windows XP) to a network using a Linksys WRT54G router, but I haven't purchased an adapter yet. Can you recommend a compatible adapter for this router?

You can try using the WZC (wireless zero configuration) utility instead of the linksys utility. Just right click the icon and select "use windows to configure my wireless settings".

You can also check for wireless interfence that could be blocking the connection of your wireless computer to the router. Try changing the channel of the router and make sure that the wireless settings are personalized.

If all those failed, you can try updating the driver on your wireless adapter and the router's firmware.

If you have any other problems, just click on ask me and ill answer it as soon as I can.

Need download for other computer to be added on

To add a second computer, take an Ethernet cable, and connect it to one of the LAN ports on the router, and to the network-port on the second computer;
there's no need for any "download" to make this work.

If the second computer has a wireless adapter, then click 'View Available Wireless Networks', and click to connect to the network.

PC works fine with Linksys USB card, but laptop's NetGear won't.

It looks like you are either using TKIP or AES just put the wireless to use MIXED and it will solve your problem.

WRT54G

No. The same adapter should work. If it is USB try moving it to a different USB port. If it is internal then try reinstalling the CD that came with it.

Desktop won't connect with printer connected to laptop

Make sure both computers can share files and can ping each other, if not, it's just a firewall issue. Try to disable your firewall first.

hi frank its a new thing to have to go out and decide what router to purchase and install i use a linksys and have had good luck with the wireless connection quality . does his laptop have a wireless lan card installed most new laptops do have one but its worth a look to make shure it does. depending on how much you want to spend how far away does his laptop sit from location of router ? if not more than 10 ft go ahead and purchase a cheaper one 60.00 now if you want a better quality one go with the twin antenna linksys for about 130,00 and please make shure that he installs the security software that comes with the router and make a password and secure it for shure .i hope ive helped you decide on what router to purchase they all work fairley good .
as far as how they work they are all plug and play install the cd software first then follow instructions carefully and set up is 10 minutes away good luck by for now

hello!

if you will connect the desktop hardwired or dierctly to the router, make sure that the ethernet adapter is properly installed and the ethernet cable is working.

if you will connect the desktop wirelessly, make sure that the wireless adapter is properly installed on the desktop and make sure that the wireless settings are properly configured.

Setting up router having problems

Hi,

You don't need to have a WiFi adapter for the desktop. It can be connected using a LAN cable from the PC's Ethernet port to one of the routers Ethernet port. AS long as the desktop is set to "Auto obtain IP add" then it should work straight out.

If the LinkSys WRT54G did not came with a setup CD/Wizard, then you would need to reset it since I can only assume that it has been tried/used elsewhere before and the settings/configuration may not match your ISP and/or your network configuration. Reset involves pressing a small recessed button at the rear of the unit for about 10 seconds or more.

Once the reset was done and your router can connect to your ISP and therefore your desktop to the Internet, the laptop would also follow suit as long as the network settings is likewise set to Auto obtain.....

To verify if you can connect to the router, on your desktop, open a browser and log on to your router using 192.168.1.1,

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Networking question

Ok, you have several options. Go to a website such as bestbuy.com. Type in linksys and look of wireless access points, wireless usb adapters or a wireless desktop adapter. I would go with the third one.
