Re: whirlpool ARC7470AL FRIDGE FREEZER
You have one of three problems and only one problem
the defrost timer is bad
the defrost heater is bad
the defrost thermastat is bad
only one of the above is the problem but no way to know without checking each part with and ohm meter

Nominal tempreture for your refrigerator is 36-38. on the Freezer the tmpreture should be between 0-2. One of the first things to check is on the freezer side is there any frost or snow build up on the rear wall of the freezer. If there were this is termed as a defrost issue. If you do have this issue with frost build up message me back and I will instruct you how to repair this issue. Another thing to check is if the evaporator fan inside the freezer is blowing the cold air into the refrigerator. The Freezer section is the only area that produces the cold tempreture a fan blows the cold air off the evaporator coils through a damper door that opens and closes depending on the tempreture the refrigerator side is set to. Also check the damper door for any ice build up as well this would cause the door not to open and close and remain in a stuck postion. This would cause inadequate tempreture in the refrigerator side as well. If you have any questions or need any schematics or step by step instructions message me back the model number of your unit and I will provide these and answer any further questions you may have. I await your reply Thank you Rick
when you adjust the tempreture dial for the refrigerator this would turn on the evaporator fan motor located behind the rear wall of the freezer click this link http://c.searspartsdirect.com/lis_png/PLDM/00052094-00007.png part number 17 on the schematic would be the panel that you would remove when you remove this panel this would give you access to the evaporator coil as well as the evaporator fan motor if the fan is not spinning then you would replace the evaporator fan motor. If you see any ice build up on the evaporator coil or the fan motor or blocking the drain located under the evaporator coil this is termed as a defrost issue. If you find this then message me back and I will give further instruction on how to diagnose why your unit is haveing a defrost issue. The freezer is the only area that produces cold in a refrigerator. The evaporator fan motor blows the cold air through a small damper door that opens and closes depending on the tempreture inside the refrigerator. The first thing to check is the fan motor that is behind the panel that I mentioned. If you remove the panel and find that the fan is blowing and spinning message me back for further diagnosis. I await your reply Thank you Rick P.s what is the tempreture inside the freezer currently?
if just the refrige isnt cold, check the damper door located between the freezer and refrige compartments and see if its open to let in cold air from freezer,if not sometimes they freeze shut and cant operate with temperature setting changes/if nothings cold, then replace the ptc overload relay located on the compressor body,it just unplugs off the compressor
if there is frost present on the rear vertical wall of the freezer compartment then the defrost function is broken and needs to be repaired the freezer is like an ice block and yo get cooling up to the refridgerator compartment air has to be able to flow and that can't happen if the frost is not eliminated
too much ice bulid up will stop enough cold air being blown into the fridge.Try turning it off letting all ice melt then turn it back on again and set thermostat at a lower temp. There may be ice you can't see.
