Question about RTO Pelican Monaco Pedal Boat

1 Answer

I have a small crack in the top of my paddle boat that takes on water when the kids are playing or when the wind kicks up and waves roll over the top. Can I make a fiberglass repair or is there another product that mates better with the paddle boat material?

I used ABS, PVC combination plumbers glue, the kind they use to put plastic waste pipe together, to patch up 2 small holes in my plastic pelican boat. It seems to melt on, so far so good

J-B Weld works even better, it's a 2 part glue available in any automotive or hardware store

SOURCE: My friend offered to strip

I suggest 6 or even 4 oz. cloth, well soaked in resin and trimmed to fit. Sand it down smooth as soon as it is cured. An extra layer around the tip (last 2-3 inches only) might be useful if you really bang it around a lot, but every bit of weight you add will be weight you have to swing 500 to 1000 times per mile.

I have a Pungo kayak that is 12 feet long and weighs about 45 pounds. As I get older and can rely less on my wife's help, I'm thinking of a smaller, lighter boat. Your Pelican Pursuit 80 Deluxe Kayak...

Bob, my first suggestion would be to look into a transport system such as Hully Rollers or the Hullivator to aid in getting your 'yak onto and off of your vehicle and then using a collapsible kayak dolly that should store neatly in a hatch (or behind your seat if you don't have hatches) to transport your boat to the water.

Also, you could try paddling with groups if there are any in your area. Not only is it safer to paddle with at least two other people (the rule is three: one to get in trouble, one to run for help, and one to point and laugh...or provide aid, whatever), but it's a lot easier to load and move boats using two or more people.

Failing that, I think I would look at a nice fiberglass or carbon fiber boat rather than downgrading to a Pelican Pursuit 80 since you sound like you're on the ocean/in big water. They can be a little pricey, but the used market tends to be rather brisk and good deals abound. Above all, if at all possible, try it before you buy it.

Can you use a paddle board in a river?

Yes. Paddle boats can be sued on any body of water as long as it is safe to do so. Always wear a personal floating device when paddle boating for added safety.

Jackson kayak hull repair

Crosslink = good luck
Linear plastic is simple: cut a sliver from your cockpit and try to weld it back with a heat gun, soldering iron or old skiwax iron, do not use open flame as this will produce soot.

There are many sources of linear plastic, use the above system to ensure compatibility of plastics.
When welding try to melt the two plastics together, I normally spin the plastic "welding rod" thereby mixing old and new material into a good composite of both.

Video is my son's Rockstar, we welded a bow protector because Jackson linear plastics cannot compare to any other boats I have paddled in thirty years. Jackson's paddle well and my son loves his boat, but as his technician it sucks.

Google "keelguard" this product may help someone.

BTW an old iron works great on linears to smooth out cuts or nicks. Boiling hot water will help pop dents out!

My husband would like to start canoeing with our 10 and 8year old kids. He is a beginner and would like to take them fishing and just relaxing trips. Do you recommend a canoe?

Canoes are great for family outings in water and they are relatively easy to use even for children as young as 6yrs, (if accompanied by an adult). Paddling is quite simple and although it may feel tippy, canoes are really quite stable in the water. Make sure the adult is in the stern of the boat so he can steer and see what the other passengers are doing.

Hole in boat

Its purpose is when you stop the boat it fills with water. The boat is built light in weight to get better peformance, the bad part is that it floats like a cork when you stop.To allow these ballast tanks to fill with water when you stop, creates a stable and solid hull that reduces wave reaction.Once you take off,it all drains out.It slows initial acceleration but once drained, you get the best of both worlds. Many larger and expensive boats use this same principal to get the same result.100 ft boats may take in as much as 10000 gallons. It dulls the affect of the waves.Hope this helps

How do iI chose a fishing boat?

There are three styles of regular fishing boats; deep v, regular v or modified v. The v determines how well the boat cuts through the depth of the water. The deep v is better suited for large lakes because they can handle heavy waves better. Regular "v" is more appropriate for smaller lakes and a man made body of water. As the water is not as deep and the waves are not as heavy, this type of boat is able to handle the situation. The modified v is the most popular version. It is capable of handling speed best. Most fishing boats on the market today are made of fiberglass or aluminum. What is best for your fishing situation? Do you want to fish in large lakes or small lakes? The options are endless. There are several classes of fishing boats for different situations. All purpose fishing boats are great for your basic fishing needs. This type of boat has space for some bench seats, fishing gear and a simple steering station. They are made of either fiberglass or aluminum and are between 15 and 20 feet long. Another type of fishing boat is a bass boat, which comes fully equipped with space for rods and fishing gear. The boat is fully built with electronics and livewells. This boat also is made out of fiberglass and aluminum. The advantage to this type of boat is it is made especially to catch bass, fast. The third type of fishing boat is the center-console. It allows a fisherman to angle from any place on the deck. The control center is located in the center. Depending on the size of the boat they can be used offshore as well as near. Flats boats are mostly made up of fiberglass. The advantage of these boats is they allow easier angling access to saltwater flat fish. Another advantage it has is a poling platform that allows for fish spotting. Finally, a casting deck allows the angler to keep control. This makes this ype of boat convenient for fishing. The final category of fishing boats is the fun boat because it combines the motor of a yacht and the functionality of large a cockpit to work trophy fish and bring them on board. If ou are a fishing fanatic then it is important to have all the things that you need to make your fishing trip a success. Fishing boats are definitely the finishing touch to a nice fishing trip.

When can I paddle with kayak?

You can, but it's all about compromise ? and safety. Generally, the shorter the boat the easier it will turn (great for rivers and white water), but the slower you'll be getting from point A to point B. The longer the boat (most sea kayaks) the better it generally tracks and the faster and safer it travels through water.

Length og a kayak

The longer the boat the faster the hull speed. So if your friends are paddling kayaks that are seventeen feet long and you are in a twelve-foot kayak, you'll be paddling much harder just to keep up. If you intend to paddle on smaller bodies of water, say ponds or small lakes where distance is not a factor, length is not so important. But if you live (or plan to paddle) on a bay, then you should consider more of a touring boat which will track straighter and move through the water with greater stability as well as speed.

Safe touring kayak

A boat designed for greater touring distances and a higher degree of safety would have a smaller cockpit, hatches and bulkheads. The smaller cockpit allows for contact with your knees for control. The hatches and bulkheads are designed to be, for the most part, air- and watertight. You can store gear (in dry bags) in these as well as have hundreds of pounds of positive buoyancy should your cockpit fill with water.
