Question about Sega Dreamcast Console

1 Answer

My Dreamcast will not stop "self-reseting". Whenever I play on it, or leave it alone, it resets by itself. I don't use the controller. Do I need to buy a new one, or can it be fixed? -Mr. Hill

The most common reason for this happening is dirty power board connector pins. Follow these steps to try and cure it but if you not happy with playing around in circuit boards do not attempt it!

Step 1. Disconnect all cables from the dreamcast including the power cable!
Step 2. Remove the dreamcast modem and take out the 4 screws in the base.
Step 3. Take the top of the dreamcast off. On the right hand side you should see the power board. Disconnect the cable that goes to the power board with a white connector.
Step 4. Remove the 2 brass screws securing the power board.
Step 5. Carefully lift the power board away from where it sits. You should see 6 pins sticking up that normally connect onto the power board. These are the pins that become corroded or dirty. Give these a clean and then re-assemble in reverse order. When replacing the power board onto these pins be careful not to apply too much pressure.

The other rarer problem is the firmware chip has become faulty. Under normal circumstances the dreamcast will run with no problems following the set of programming instructions that are written on the firmware chip. If this becomes damage, either by electrical surge, excess static or simply by age degradation then the machine will basically not know what to do. The reset is the product of this.

As to fixing it, it would be extremely difficult as you would need to locate which chip contained the firmware and resolder a new firmware chip onto the board. Most of these components are surface mount technology and need special machines to attach them to the board.

If the power board connector solution does not work then you are more than likely going to need a new console.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

Samsung HT-E5400 changes/cycles through sources by itself.

FW Update 001016 will fix your issue on the E5400. Try going to the settings menu and under support check system update. If you can make through the menus it before it cuts you off you should be fine and this will NOT reset your player
Alternatively you must reset the player (I know...) by holding the STOP button on the touch panel for 20 seconds until the screen goes black and it will hard reset. This will take you through the initial setup where you can upgrade free of distraction.
This will not technically FIX the problem of the ghost pushing buttons, but it will at least leave you alone while it plays from your laptop.

I was playing with my Dreamcast and one day it would not recognize the controller.i turned it off and i tried it again. The same thing happend.Do i have to open the controller and clean it?

The pins on the controller connector might need to be cleaned or the cable might have short-circuited. Try using another controller to make sure it is the controller and not the system itself.

Oven lock stuck in locked position and oven door won't close - was starting self cleaning and then checked to see if door was locked and door opened, but lock engaged, and now oven door won't shut. ...

Hello there:
This is a very common issue with these appliances whenever the cleaning cycle is interrupted this normally is the result.
So what you will need to do is to first unplug the appliance from the wall outlet and leave it alone for 1 hour this allows the internal self reset feature to reset the oven.
once the hour has elapsed plug it back in and you should hear a audiable click within about 5 min or if you have a cancel button press it and you should be able to continue from there okHopethis is very helpful for you Please keep me posted ok
Best regards mike

My ps stops reading the disc after 10-15 minutes and then resets itself. do i need to format it causeing me to lose everything?

No,its not your hard drive. It more possibly could be the laser lens. It may be dirty or it may need to be replaced. If it is reading the disc then I would say it doesn't need to be replaced its just dirty. I know there is a laser lens cleaner for the psx, saturn, dreamcast, and ps2. However, I'm not to sure there is one for the ps3 or xbox360. Maybe the one I mentioned before works on all disc based systems. For the future, if you leave any game or dvd is your system when it is off for a prolonged period of time, the disc acquires dust and other things that when you play it again it scratches the laser lens or due to the revolutions (spinning) it kicks off the dust and makes the laser lens dirty. So do not leave your discs in there for a prolonged period of time. Hope this helps....

My dreamcast randomly resets itself!

Its been a while since i've owned a dreamcast. My suggestion wouild be to make sure the parts on the inside are clean.Game consoles are known to collect a lot of dust over a long period of time.I would wipe it down with acohol, since it drys fast and leaves no residue.Your reset button might not be getting a connection.
