Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Our PS3 60gb, with 4 USB ports is having problems reading the new PS3 games. The old PS2 games still play. When it comes to games like Rachet and Clank or any other new game, it will start then freeze. I was told it could possibly be the blue ray player. What do you think? How do you fix it?

Hi there, it definitely sounds like the blu ray player. They are relatively simple to fit yourself as long as your warranty has expired. If it is still under warranty just phone Sony and they will replace it.

If you warranty has expired then you can buy a working blu ray drive on ebay for around £60. There is a circuit board that is attached to the blu ray drive, it is extremely important that you keep this as it is paired to your motherboard. Your PS3 will only work with that blu ray circuit board, no others.

To actually replace the drive is pretty easy. On the left hand side of your console there is a warranty sticker covering a little rubber bung. If your system is out of warranty peel back the sticker a little so you can remove the rubber bung. Under this rubber bung there is a small torx head screw, I think a T8 torx but a small flat blade screwdriver will take it out.

After you have removed this screw the whole top of the PS3 slides to the left and comes off. Underneath the PS3 top cover there is another plastic cover with screws all around it. As you are looking from the front of the console there is a marking on the plastic cover that points to one screw that says "S", this is a shorter screw and only goes back in that place. Remove all the screws. Just to the left of the short screw there is a small recess in the plastic casing where you have to push a little black clip back gently while lifting the cover from the back of the PS3. It should all lift forward and come off.

On the right hand side of the PS3 you will now see your blu ray drive. It lifts up but be careful, there is a ribbon cable and power cable attached to it. The ribbon cable is hidden underneath. You have to carefully lift the long black strip that is on the clips where the cable is held. This will release pressure on the ribbon cable and allow you to remove it. You will see the blu ray logic board attached to the back of the drive. Remove this from the drive taking care with a very small connector with a black and red wire, this is the optical sensor wires, remove with care!! Nowafter you have done that you are ready to replace your blu ray :)

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

How to play play ps2 games on your ps3

You can only play PS2 games on your PS3 if it is backwords compatible, and the easy way to find out is to see how many USB Ports are in front of the console. If you have 2 USB Ports, no go. If you have 4 USB Ports in front, it is backwords compatiable. Another easy way to find out is if you own a fat PS3 with 4USB Ports you are good to go, just pop the CD in and it will play. If you own a slim PS3, you are out of luck, when Sony intoduced the slim ps3, to save money, they removed the backwords compatible chip from the hardware inside.

Playing PS2 Games on a PS3 - Check Backwards Compatibility

Not all PS3 consoles have the capability to play PS2 games. Sony have removed PS2 compatibility altogether from the new PS3 slim and the later version PS3s only have limited capability to play PS One games.

This Tip is written to help you determine if your console is backward compatible for PS2 games.

First locate the model number of your PlayStation 3 system by finding the bar code sticker at the back of the console. Underneath the bar code you will see the 11-digit serial number followed by the model number which begins with "CECH".

a37a1ba.png

Models that have PS2 game compatibility are first generation consoles and the versions are 80GB, 60GB and 20GB. These PS2 compatible consoles will all have 4 USB ports which is another useful identifier.

See below for a breakdown of the model numbers that are compatible with running PS2 games;

1) Model No: CECHE01 - These are 80 GB models with 4 USB ports. (Please note 80GB models with 2 USB ports are not compatible).

2) Model No: CECHA01 60 GB models

3) Model No: CECHB01 20 GB models

Another important factor here is the PS2 games themselves.

Even if you have one of these consoles, a PS2 game may run fine on one version say the 60GB but may not work on the 80GB.

If you have identified that you have one of these consoles and want to check if a particular game is compatible with it use the link below. You can enter the exact console you are using - then enter the PS2 game you want to play;
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

This will give a definitive answer on compatibility between a particular PS2 game you want to play and the actual console you have.

I do hope this Tip has clarified the issues for you.

Wont play games old ps3 only dvd only slect games

If your PS3 has 4 USB ports in it, it will be able to play old PS2 DVD games. The newer versions only have 2 USB ports and have the DVD-playing option taken out.

Having problems with Dark Cloud 2.

Hello,

If your PS2 is horizontal, i suggest you put it in vertical position, if yet, it is not playing your dark cloud 2, it means your PS2 could be an old version that can not read the dark cloud 2 game because it is possible that the dark cloud 2 has come with a higher version that your PS2 could not read.

You might need to upgrade your PS2 to an higher version that will be able to read all the new version of the game.

Take care.

What software can i use to play files from my flash drive using a ps2? Can i use Action replay or codebreaker or any other software?

well i would have to say that playing a game from a usb drive is not dependable, think about this for a second. The playstation 2 would have to somehow read the files on the usb drive, but then also take information off the drive to run the game. that usb port wont handle that much data, its just not possible to have ur ps2 trying to run a file on something that can only send so much data to it. Even a HardMOD[ meaning a chip is installed physicaly] its still hard to imagine someone trying to make that possible, but see if you have a Big ps2 then a hardrive is the only option, see the old ps2s were supposed to have a harddrive option but it endded up being a part of a game FFXI, so if you have a hardrive for the ps2 then you simply SoftMod it[ Software that mods the ps2 either threw the gamegenie or codebreaker and other programs, but the new ones dont have that option of a harddrive and if you have one you are out of luck using a harddrive as storage, but there is something called disc swapping.

see when you open ur ps2 tray theirs three or two buttons inside the slim ps2 that tell the ps2 when the dvd tray is open and thus it wont read a game till you close it.

but by tapping those key buttons down{ google how to do this,] you can burn a ps2 game and then with one legit ps2 game you first use the legit game and let it read then swap out the legit with any burned game and then one more swap and it allows you two play any burned game with just one legit game
