Why is there grinding metal sound and burning smell when turned on?

It is probably the rear bearing where the drum spins. You will need to replace it or add grease to it. It is not easy to reach, you will need to practically take the dyer apart to get to the rear.

Replaced heating element. Dried one load of clothes and element went out again. What could be the problem?

The likelihood of a second element failure is very remote, unless the element suffered some damage, like bending or chipping.
It seems more likely that you have a thermal limiter that is opening. There can be two or more, and they are in series with the power to the element.
Unplug the dryer and test the thermal limiters.
Another area to look at is the control switch. Long story short, there is a ton of current going to the element. The contacts in the switch can carbon up and overheat.

Maytag Centennial Dryer (MEDC400VW) not drying properly

First of all, please make sure the vent is clear all the way through. Next the vent must be straight as possible. Next it can not be to long. People think that because they feel the air outside the vent is clear, not always true. The vent can be partially clogged. So make sure. Next, if the vent hose has sags or bows and even tight turns. It can accumulate the moisture in it from the drying proceed. If water has collected in the vent hose the clothes will not dry properly. If the vent is to long it can not dry properly either, the blower on the dryer can only move air so far. So the shorter the better. If all of these requirements are meet. Then, I would have to start checking the thermostats. I hope I have helped you. Please respond if you need further assistance.
