Question about Encore 10/100 FAST ETHERNET 8-PORT SWITCH (852189001275)

1 Answer

Switch connectivity Hi, I have two small switches connected to a wireless router. All of a sudden this morning, the wired portion of our network (the portion that uses our switches) went out. No connectivity. I know it's the switches and not the router because those of us that have wireless, get get out to the internet no problem. My question is, can I log onto or get into the switches to diagnose to problem. I've done all of the obvious things - turned everything on and off etc. Help!

Depending on router brand you may be able to log in and check that wired portion is enabled...look carefully at documentation for instructions. I had a similar problem with a D-Link Router and found the info for enabling wired connection at their website. Another problem I had one time was ( believe it or not ) one of my cats has a **** for chewing on wires !!! It was an easy fix after figuring out the problem. Cat is now at SPCA ( just kidding )

The router controls and assigns IPs. Configuration goes from ISP modem to router to switch.

I have a D-Link DSS-16+ and I was wondering if I could plug the dsl modem in any port on it and will it work? Thanks

The DSS means that this is a switch, not a router. This means that you will need a router between your modem and the switch. Switches are usually used in workplaces where there are many machines connecting to the internet with wired connections. For home use, most things connect wirelessly. The reason why you need a router is because a switch cannot create internal IP addresses like a router can. It can only pass on the IP information.

I am trying to install a Netgear router after my switch. I end up having no internet on some of the computers connected to the hub and none on the router. If I configure the router as a dhcp client...

You'll want to configure your router as a dhcp server. Connect the switch to your router's lan port. Connect the remaining devices to a port on the switch. Your wireless access point should have it's dhcp server disabled. You can only have one dhcp server per network. The wireless can get it's address from the router's dhcp and the wireless client devices will get their ip address from the router, as well. If your wireless access point is a router with a wan/broadband port and some switch ports you will want to make sure that you are connecting to your Asus switch via one of the switch ports.
Be sure that your client devices are configured to get their ip address via dhcp and you should be surfing the interweb in no time flat.

Two pc connection by dlink switch

connect the router to the switch using any port-it does not matter which port you use. Connect each computer to any port on the switch-it matters not. The router will assign IP address to the computer as they are added.

DONE!!!

Good Luck
