In fact, the computer should detect the Lg Dvd Burner itself without any problem. First, is the Drive is detected? if so, there should be no problem with it. But you should also keep in mind, there's no specific LG drivers for Ubuntu. It should simply detect the Drive as it does on the windows. If it's asking for a driver, then there's no possibility and Ubuntu confirms that, check out here (Aviod LG Cd/Dvd products for Linux). But don't misunderstand after reading these Lg users discussions, most of them are talking about the software to burn Cds/Dvds, and this means nothing related to the drivers to run the optical drive. You will know, it works and it doesn't work, there's no proof why it works and there's no proof why it doesn't, if it works with Ubuntu, then you are lucky, but if it doesn't, then you or we can do nothing, only to accept the fate.

But let me confirm, if there's no defect or if there's no hardware problem, it should work perfectly. If you mean other softwares, like Nero or Roxio then that's another case. This is all I can tell you for now. If you need further help, let me know with more details.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Your optical drive might be defective. Most DVD-RW drives last less than 2 years. You should get a new one.

What SATA cables are required for use with an LG gh22ls50

All SATA devices use the same cables. There are 2. The wider one is the power, and the skinny one is for data. They tend to be red in color, and have keyed ends that prevent being put on wrong.

LG GH22 LS50 (Sata Dvd Writer) Will not write dvd discs

What software do u use to write DVDs on both PCs...
if they are different then that may be the issue....
dont spoil the DVDs....
try DVD RW disks...that way you can erase them later...
i too have the same DVD writer, not had any issue in either XP or Win7....i have dual boot and have made many movie DVDs using both OS...i use Nero and Power2Go of LG(the install disk that came with the LG DVD writer has this great software...."LG Power tool")
try this should work...

the inbuilt DVD creator in Win7 has some issues with DVD creation....due to non compatibility of graphics card and display drivers (WDDM)....+ you may not have the correct codec required to burn DVDs.....
get the FFDSHOW codec from google.... and install it...shutdown and restart and then try...
let me have a feedback pls...

1) there are no drivers....your operating system has whats needed to operate it.
2) hooking it to a netbook will require you to have it put in an encloser that has a power source, as you can not run the drive with out power supply.
3) you would be better off buying an external DVD Burner, One designed for your purpose. That unit you have will not operate on its own, and you can not hook it directly to your netbook

Usually Ubuntu doesnt require any additional motherboard drivers if it has an open source version.

In Ubuntu 9.04, System> HARDWARE DRIVERS will show you all proprietary drivers in the system. You can ACTIVATE them there. Some files may be required to be downloaded from internet.

Installing drivers

Can you give some additional info on what you are using for OS. In general the ATI software for Vista will install with no problem right from there website.

If you have jumped ship for Linux, then there are different issues with each distro. I currently use Ubuntu 8.10 and it comes with the ATI driver. It will recognise the hardware right after bootup. Other flavors like Fedora 9,10 are not as easy.
