    I have the same problem as well. I got the hard drive on Black Friday from Comp-USA in 2006 but after so long, it doesnt work now either. My computer doesn't recognize it and neither do my storage drives.

    I have a similar problem, at end of session 1 week back, I turned off back power switch (light was steady blue). A week later back from travels I powered up laptop, turned on the Acomdata HD320UE5-72 external hard drive and walked away , usually takes 1-2 mins to fomat, etc. On my retrun I noticed on the hard drive a steady red light, instaed of the normal blue.

    The adjoing 100GB hard drive was/is working fine but the Acomdata light stayed red, and is not communicating w/ laptop. Laptop continues to try to find the G: drive for the Acomdata, but the Acondata is not communicating.

    Closer physical inspection I do hear a slight whirling noise inside and a very light clicking sound. This sounds to me like a hardware issue and replacing the acondata is not a problem.

    But, I need the 300 GB of music that is on the Acomdata drive any suggestions on recovering this

    Same problem. The hard drive powers on but I only hear a whirling and clicking noise. I recall seeing a steady red light the day before the problem.

    I have teh same problem...after 1 year, give or take, the drive no longer is recognized on any computer that I plug it into.

    Same thing--have had this drive for a while, no warning it was not going to work. Light still glows steady blue, like always, but computer does not "see" the drive. Small whirring/clicking noise. The first time it did this, I went to Device Manager and it showed up there, and I got the computer to reassign it a drive letter (fortunately was able to get my irreplaceable photos onto another drive that time). Now, it doesn't even show up in device manager.

I have the 250 GB Acomdata drive. Had the exact same problem--computer would not recognize drive; blue light on drive lit and drive making a slight whirring/clicking noise. I read somewhere that some people that have had this problem have found the problem is with the USB interface between the drive and case, NOT with the drive itself. I took the drive out of its case and installed it in a desktop computer and was able to get all of the data off of the drive.

If you have the blinking red/blue light and clicking noise you should try a new AC adapter. I just got the same power supply from a friend's drive and the problem is gone. Drive is back to normal and all contents are intact. Don't be fooled by the green light on the AC adapter. Even though it's on, it might be damaged. I guess my was damaged by lightning a few days ago.

I had the similar problem; a 500GB Acomdata External Hard Drive (2.5" form factor) was just not mounting to my Intel Power Mac.
The problem was simply the USB Cord that came with the drive... I replaced it and the drive mounted right away, it even activated Time Machine automatically.
I hope it works for you too.

    Did you get the cable from Acomdata or was it a typical usb 2.0?

if your sure the device works, reassign some drive letters in computer administration to see if the drive is trying to use a drive letter being used by another drive.

Problems with Hard Drive

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

T your concern:
  • initially, pls verify that it is indeed an external storage problem rather than a laptop USB issue by trying other USB devices and determine if they are recognized and working;
  • disassemble the enclosure of the Acomdata external hard drive and remove the actual hard drive;
  • you would need the use of a 2nd PC, a desktop that could accommodate the HD from the Acomdata (IDE or SATA);
  • install the HD from the Acomdata as a Secondary Master or Slave internally to the 2nd PC;
  • boot the 2nd PC and determine if the HD from the Acomdata will be recognized as a local drive;
  • chances are that the partition of the HD from the Acomdata was messed up. This would explain the blinking blue light;
  • download and install a file recovery program. An example is GetDataBack (unfortunately not a freeware but DEMO is available) and do a recovery. It would take some time based on the size of the HD from the Acomdata;
  • temporarily save the recovered data in the 2nd PC. You can burn this likewise into a DVD backup should the 2nd PC be capable of that;
  • after recovery, re-partition and format the HD from the Acomdata while still attached to the 2nd PC;
  • should the re-partition and format be successful, you can transfer back the temporarily saved recovered files;
  • a nice, simple, fast and safe partitioning/formatting software is Partition Magic (unfortunately not a freeware but FREE TRIAL is available).
  • should the re-partition and format be not successful, you can replace only the HD and/or claim warranty.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Try checking your power cord adapter.
I found the same problem was with the cord.
Luckily, I had another Acomdata HD cord to check the problem.

Problem 2

The feint ticking noise usually indicates a dead hard drive.
The heads are flicking back and forth at random and make the ticking noise you hear.
The drive can still be detected because the physical hard drive and the controller board on it are in reality 2 seperate components working together. So the controller board is also trying to access the hard drive without luck.

If you have not dropped the unit or knocked it over etc, then chances are the controller board is what has died and therfore you still cannot access the drive. You may get lucky in finding a new controller board to replace a failed one and that will also get your data back.

Hard Drive doesn't show up

Hi,

Try doing flea power & the power cycle.

1. Disconnect all the peripherals like keyboard,mouse,printer, scanner & monitor and power supply from the CPU.

And press & hold the power button for 2 min, it will release the flea power from the mother board.

Restart the system & check.

2. Disconnect everything.wait for 5-10 minutes and then connect every thing.

Restart the system.

If it does not resolve the issue then you can try this :

Just remove the registry key it happen when this key is corrupted.

HLKM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR

And delete all references to the external hard drive.

And also HLKM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

and found the keys associated with the USB to IDE value.

After restarting the system, the drive shold be detected & configured automatically by the computer.

Good Luck.

Can i open the external and use it directly as a hard drive? it isn't working as an external.

Most enclosures can be opened and the drive removed to be installed physically into your Pc. Make sure your jumpers are installed correctly for the position you intend to install it on the ide cable ( ribbon )either master, slave or cable select. Usually when you hear a noise coming from the HD itself , that's not a good sign. you might experience your pc not even booting with that HD installed if its really messed up. Good Luck.
