Question about GE 19.5 Cu. Ft. Bottom-Mount Refrigerator - Stainless-Steel

1 Answer

I have a PDS20SBSBLSS GE Profile 19.5 CF Fridge and the temperatures keep going up in the freezer and a bit in the fridge. The freezer went over 10 degrees and then was okay for a while and now it's doing the same thing. The technician cam and said they would need to replace the board at a cost of $500. It's an expensive fix - any idea if this is the right solution?

The temp in the freezer ranges from 0 at times(the recommended setting) to 10 degrees(although it was 19 the other day). Last night it was 9 this morning it's -1. The temperature in the fridge randges from 33 to 37(the recommended setting - although the other day it was up in the 40s). The problem seems to come and go.

The fridge seems to always be making a humming noise which I haven't heard stop today.

It's working better now, although the temps seem to fluctuate quite a bit. Thanks.

Please confirm a few things before I can provide you some idea of what could be going on with your fridge.

1. when you say temperature in freezer keeps going up - do you mean it is warming up by over 10 degrees. so instead of 0 deg F is it staying at 10deg F.
2. when you say a bit in the fridge do you mean fridqe is warmer by a bit - is it above 25deg C.

Even if the controller is to be replaced it is about $140
See this site and should not be that hard to replace as it is at the back top part of the fridge. See this diagram (item 801).

Before we do all that, also check if the compressor keeps running all the time or there are moments when the fridge is quiet.

From what you are mentioning about the humming noise being there it means the compressor is running continuously.

If you have not already done this - try to drag the fridge (turn the power off first and wait 5 minutes) out and check if the coils at the back are clean. Also clean the compressor area. Then turn power back on the firdge (away from the wall) and observe for a day or so.

Let me know if it makes no difference to the temperatures.

You probably have a sensor issues there are two one for the freezer one for the frig. Check your freezer temp it should be at 0 degress at manufactor setting. If the temp is below -10 you freezer sensor is bad. Otherwise your frig sensor is bad. CHECK FREEZER FIRST!!!

You need to put a heat source in the fridge compartment near the fridge thermostat. Try putting a lower wattage bulb (40w) into the fridge compartment. Or even try this, take the door switch out of the fridge and short the two leads together. Tape the exposed ends with electrical tape and that should provide enough heat to keep your compressor on long enough to keep the freezer cold. Just remember to put the switch back in in the spring and summer months or you will have a real high electrical bill. Hope this helps you.

Not getting any water out of the dispenser, but its making ice

The water dispenser on my GE profile fridge stopped working for a couple days. The refrigerator and freezer temperatures have fluctuated over the past several months causing fridge items to periodically freeze and freezer items to periodically thaw. GE tech came today identified a bad circuit board, which he replaced for a cool $300. Ouch. Fridge is only three years old. Oh yeah, the icemaker also has a broken tab which causes it to jam every couple weeks. We have GE Profile appliances throughout our kitchen and they all work great except for the fridge :-( I hope GE engineers read this post. If so, get to work! LOL

Are numbers being displayed at all? If you want to confirm whether they are wrong or not, try putting a thermometer inside the fridge for about 10 minutes and check it against the temperature displayed. If it's wrong then it's probably the temperature sensor and would need to be replaced.

I suppose it's a long shot but could it be displaying 18 and feels more like 65? (Celcius vs. Farenheit)
