Question about Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

My GE GDL20KCSABS has been making odd rhythmic clicking noises for a long while. We had a power failure and It started working intermittently. The freezer worked and the fridge didn't; now neither are getting cold. In reading the other comments it sounds like it might be the motherboard WR55X10942? Where is the motherboard located in this model? Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob. I need to ask if you have done the unplug it for 30 minutes routine. What happens when there is a brief power outtage is the coolant system is not stabilized so the internal compressor temps and pressures are very high. As a result the compressor tries to start with those internal high pressure and the only thing that happens is the Klixon thermal overload will cycle about every 4 - 5 minutes but the compressor will not start. As a result of that cycling and the compressor not starting the interanl compressor heat remains very high and self heats in the process. Hence I recommend you unplug the unit and possible place a fan directed toward the bottom of the unit to assist in cooling it down. After 30 minutes plug the unit back in and see if the compressor starts.
Just a note about appliances damaged by power.... you may want to contact your local unility. There is a good chance they can be held liable for the damages as a result of that outtage especially if there was a high voltage surge as a result of power restoration or initial power failure.

Your main circuit board is item 801 of this link

and appears to be on the back of the unit. Access panel for the main board item 415 must be removed to change the main board.

Just a note item 621 on the side of the evaporator is a thermal fuse. It can cause this problem also. It is a very remote possibility though.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Microwave made noise when it was not in use.

It depends what was making the noise. a bad door switch could cause the turntable motor and the fan to fun. If is heating it may still be worth repairing. I would check the door switches. See if you notice any browning around the plastic insulators where the wires plug onto the switches. If so, you will need to replace bad switch and run new wires and connectors to the new switch too.

We installed a GE Spacemaker Microwave. I put some potatoes in and the microwave was working, suddenly it went off. No light nothing, it just went completely dead. Came back ON after 15 mins,started...

The main fuse may be intermittent, causing complete power failure, the other possibility is a defective door switch not operating properly, or loose plug in the power feed, I suggest a technician to take closer look at the system because this could prove tricky to find the culprit.

I have a model GE JVM1653BD 001 microwave. Sometimes when it runs it makes a loud growling sound. It appears to be heating normally though. Intermittantly makes this noise.

I have the same model ending in 003, and it has made this noise for most of its life of several years now. Every now and again it runs quietly.

My theory is the cooling fan (not the hood fan) is making noise. The problem began within the first year of operation, and up till now everything is in good working order otherwise. There is no odor of failing parts.

My installation book has no electrical circuit diagrams, and I came upon your question when searching the topic.

Magnatron suddenly making more noise. Much louder

Often over the years the Transformer laminations can loosen, from the on/off rising and collapsing magnetic fields, and then they sorta hum louder. I suspect this is what is going on. Shouldn't be too much of a worry.. keep an eye on it tho.

Microwave doesn't heat anything

This more than likely is the magnatron,< heats food >, making noise and not working. it isn,t really easy fix and can be done if you get part and experienced person to walk you through it. Most GE magnatrons have at least 5 yr warranty and if it isn't that old call them first.

GE Spacemaker making odd noise

We are having the same problem with our XL1400. I suspect it has something to do with the turn table but don't know for sure. We would be willing to disconnect the turn table...anything to stop the noise but don't know how.

Is it a rhythmic thumping, or intermittent, or one thump when it first starts?

If it's rhythmic, it may be a failing turntable motor or stirrer.

If it's a thump just when you hit Start or when the magnetron turns on at the beginning of the cook cycle, it may just be a common noise that they sometimes make due to the magnetic field produced by the high voltage transformer.
