Poulan pro 42cc,18",PPB4218 is very hard to start and runs for a short time and then will not start when hot. It worked well first year, badly this season.Changed spark plug and cleaned fuel filter and exhaust mesh and adjusted idle up.

Check basics 1st fuel , air, compression, spark , timming
then secondary compression ie crankcase air tightness
2 strokes need air tight c/case in order to draw in & pump mixture

check your tank breather is working,

has this saw been sitting a while ? if so might pay to rekit carb

check your carby diaphrams are pliable and inlet screen is not blocked and metering needle is set flush with chamber floor,
are hi / lo needles set base settings are 1-1/4 turns out from lightly seated , final hi setting is done while @ full rev and needs to 4 stroke slightly

check ignition spark under load ie while under compression load- could be a weak spark

check timming key

check for a air leak at cylinder / manifold block gasket or carb joint

check barrell bolts are tight everything been = engine should run

cheers

Just finished fixing a 42cc Poulan. It had been sitting...a long while...dried out metering diaphragm.....stiff fuel pump diaphragm (crackly blue mylar)...little debris in carb filter screen.....air gap between coil legs and flywheel too close, scraping at times. Fuel lines weak from age and ethanol destruction. Fuel filter bad with dried up oil outside and inside. Fixed ALL these issues (gasket and diaphragm carb kit the kicker) and she runs better than new (so the owner says).

I have a poulan pro 4218 it was running great when i put it away last year . went to start it this year put in fresh fuel i have a spark used starting fluid doesnt even try to start what gives?

If there is good fuel in the tank and there is a good spark, there is only two reasons why it will not fire up, the ignition timing is out ( sheared flywheel key ) or there is too little compression ( engine has seized at some time trapping the rings )

Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18": New gas, clean plugs..Ran fine last year, won't st...

Check for a plugged fuel filter and defective fuel lines. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight. Check for spark at the plug--it should be blue and snappy with a new plug. If ok, squirt in some fuel mix in the plug hole, replace the plug, and see if it will pop a couple of times. If ok, make sure the primer bulb draws fuel into it after several pumps. If still won't run, remove the lower chamber of the carburetor and check the diaphragm for flexibility and no holes. Hope this helps!

I have a Poulan Pro PP4218AVX 18" 42cc. The saw seems to be running at about 1/2 speed, how do I fix or adjust this?

there should be 2 adj. screws going in to the carb marked L and H. Try turning the H jet in a little at a time and see if this helps. Or you can slowly turn it in all the way until you feel it stop. don't turn it any further in or you will damage the needle valve tip. Turn it out 1 1/2 turns and start the saw. It should run good at that setting. If not then adjust the screw in or out until it runs faster.
