Do i need to add water to my slow cooker if so where do put it

All the ingredients in a crock-pot meal go into the ceramic pot. You don't add any water to the cooker itself. The cooker is basically just a holder for the pot and provides the heat. Any liquid goes into the pot with the rest of the goodies. The pot on many models is removable for serving and cleaning, while the base should be kept away from water (like any other electrical appliance).

If you need a manual for your cooker, you can try here for Rival brand models, here for Hamilton-Beach products, and here for West Bend. Chances are you'll find your model or one similar enough that it should clear up any questions.

Now, what's on the menu?

Use of an old slow cooker

NO!
it should say on the metal below the ceramic pot to not get it wet

slow cookers make enough heat to heat the contents of the ceramic pot.

I have a Rival smart pot given to me no instructions do i need to put water in the base part and then the ceramic and how much water do i need?

You do not put water in the base. Just put your ingredients in the crock part and whatever liquid the receipe calls for. you can probably find the instruction manual on crockpot.com or call and ask them to send one.

I just put some precooked, still warm food in my crockpot. I tried to set the control to warm so I could serve later. Can't get warm to turn on. How can I?

To better diagnose your problem I need more information. Does your crockpot have a light that indicates when your heating element is ON? If so, increase the temp of the crock pot knob to find out if the LED light comes on at all. (you may also wish to make sure the unit is plugged in and the outlet is working properly.)

Since all crockpots work using a temp sensor, it could be that the temp of the food is still warm enough that the crockpot thermostat is not calling for additional heat to maintain the temperature. If you can, remove the crockpot liner and let the unit cool somewhat to allow the thermostat to return to room temp and reset.

If this doesnt solve your problem, chances are that the sensor/thermostat may be faulty or one of the circuits to the heating element may have overheated causing a wire to become disconnected or burn out. Appliances can wear out with use or age and even power surges can 'fry' delicate circuitry.

Without thinking I put frozen bratwurst into my Crockpot and turned it on high. Now there is a hairline crack in the ceramic insert. Can I safely repair this before the crock falls apart? What woold be...

I would suggest that by adding frozen goods to an ambient pot and the heater has kicked in causing a crack in the ceramic pot - this is unrepairable as the damage done is deep into the pot.
A similar problem is putting hot water onto a frozen windscreen - it will crack.
The damage is caused by applying alternate extremes of tempatrature to a solid.
You could glue it, but it may well leak later in use, or may not be entirely stable in the wash. You might find it could separate when you are cleaning it.

Sorry, but I hope this helps.

HI BETTE...I USED THIS ITEM FOR THE 1ST TIME TODAY...I DECIDED TO TRY IT AT A TIME WHEN I WOULD BE HOME TO OBSERVE THE PROCESS...I USED THE FROZEN BANQUET CROCKPOT CHICKEN WITH POTATOES, VEGGIES & SAUCE FOR MY 1ST EXPERIMENT...INSTRUCTIONS : SET ON LOW FOR 8-10 HOURS...AFTER LESS THAN 4 HRS, THE SAUCE WAS BURNING/STICKING TO THE SIDES OF THE CROCK POT AND THE VEGGIES WERE MUSH...IT WAS BUBBLING UP LIKE IT WAS ON THE HIGHEST SETTING ON THE STOVE TOP...I CALLED RIVAL ( 800.323.9519 ) AND SPOKE TO MARIO IN CUSTOMER SERVICE...HE DID SOME EXPLAINING ABOUT THE HEATING ELEMENTS BEING ON THE BOTTOM AND THE SIDES OF THE HEATING BASE AND SUGGESTED TO CUT ALL SLOW COOKER RECIPE TIMES IN HALF, INCLUDING THE RECIPE BOOK THAT CAME WITH THE CROCKPOT...I'M GOING TO TRY THIS AGAIN WITH ANOTHER FROZEN BANQUET CROCK POT PRODUCT ($6.00) , I'LL REDUCE THE COOKING TIME AND INCREASE THE ADDED WATER...I'M NOT GOING TO USE AN EXPENSIVE CUT OF MEAT UNTIL I GET THE HANG OF THIS "SMART" POT...I'VE ALWAYS USED THE OLD FASHIONED TYPE SLOW COOKER WHERE IT WAS SLOW EVEN ON THE HI SETTING !!! GOOD LUCK, VALERIE M. 1/11/07
