Black & Decker Grass Hog Electric Trimmer

The automatic feed for the trimmer line is no longer working. I have replaced the trimmer spool with a new B & D spool ( I was replacing my own line) but the auto feed still does not work. Please advise. Thanks

Having the same problem with mine, so far I cannot find a solution.

  • popish May 23, 2008

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. When I press the button the spool rotates and cuts grass for about 10 seconds then stops. checked all connections, even took it apart and found no loose wires.

Thanks hammer drill! I bought a new lever release for the spool and I'm no longer manually feeding line.

My auto feed no no longer works. I went so far as to buy a new trimmer which worked well for a while but now has the same problem.

  • mompy Jul 27, 2008

Where do you buy the lever release??

  • wfhenderson Aug 03, 2008

I have exactly the opposite problem. Mine will not stop feedling line. I have disassembled the head and it is clean inside and the white arm moves freely, When turning the spool by hand the cogs seem to lock in place and the spool turns in unison with the shaft. But as soon as I apply power, it begins feeding and cutting its line without stop.

The machine overheats the line actually melt together and won't automatic feed. This is my second one with the same problem

I had this problem too, but it had nothing to do with the white lever. I finally found the solution in a clue about the line. Black & Decker line on the pre-wound spools is silicone lubricated. I tried spraying my line with WD-40, but that didn't help.

Here's what works: Talcum powder.

You can get it anywhere, usually labeled as baby powder, but make sure that it is talc, not corn starch baby powder.

I spread the sides of the bulk spool enough to shake the power in, maybe two teaspoons or less around the coiled line, then put it in a zipper plastic bag and shook ti to thoroughly coat the line.

Before loading the B&D spool, I rubbed a little more talc inside it, then wound the line.

It worked flawlessly!

The white lever in mine is broken too! Where can you get one to replace it and does that make the line feed constantly when it is broken?

Yes! the previous answer is the correct one! I had generic silicone spray which did the job quite nicely.

The nylon thread has worn down. How do I get more of it to come off the spool which is still full?

Hi cmlontg152...

You will have the grass hog running and then bump the turning head on the ground and it will automatically feed out the line, the more you bump it on the ground the longer the line will be...don't make it too long at a time...only what you need.

Black and Decker electric trimmer (grass hog) model GH600...eats thru line, one spool lasts about 3 minutes

It sounds like that the automatic line release is damaged.

1. Remove and clean all debris from the head. I assume that you have already done this if you have changed the line a few times, but just make sure.

2. Remove the the head from the shaft.

3. There should be a large spring in there. If its broken, damaged or missing that will allow the head to spool line pretty fast. again make sure all debris is removed from this area.

4. Check the feed dogs in the same area as the spring. If they are worn the same problem will occur.

5. Install line on the spool.Make sure that it is wound the proper direction. There should be arrows indicating this. The line wound in reverse will also cause the same problem as well.

6. Put it all back together and see if works now.

7. If this doesn't solve it you may need to replace the head assembly.

Good luck!

B & D auto feed string trimmer won't advance string

Is the string spool seated on the rachet correctly? If so and all is well, it is worth noting that these trimmers auto feed fuunction is problematic at best, requiring manually unwinding some line every few minutes as the unit gets older.

My Balck&Decker Grasshog won't automatically feed line.

Just replace the LEVER, Item #29, Part #598435-00, for about $3.00 (B&D, Dewalt). Just pull old level straight out (pliers) and push replacement in. Level end expands to hold it in place. No other parts. Forget cleaning and replacement the spool, graphite or oiling... just replace the lever.

Auto feed spool doesn't work

You may need to purchase a new spool housing, which may not be too hard to do, if you have one of the name brand trimmers. This replaces the whole mechanism that holds the line, the retaining ring, etc.
