Question about Garmin GPSMAP 180 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Garmin 180 When I turn on the GPSMAP 180 I get a message lost of back up memory. I replaced the battery and the unit worked fine for a few days and then I started to get the lost of memory message again. What would cause the battery to go bad so soon after replacement?

You need to replace the internal Battery with the Panasonic BR2032-1F2 battery. However, yes your waypoints will most likely get lost when you do this.

The screen on the inside of my gpsmap 76 got wet. how can i find out if the unit is still powering up so that i can download my waypoint to my p.c.

If it's still wet, don't do ANYTHING until it drys out.
May take a few days until it does. Putting in a warm, dry environment will help. Like on your dashboard on a warm day.
After you know it's dry, plug in and see what happens. Worst case it doesn't work because of a short or corrosion. Best case it works.
If there was a way to get the battery out that would be best. Then wait for it to dry out.
If it doesn't work you may have to send back to Garmin for repair. Or replace it. Good luck.

Gpsmap 180 firmware corrupt

It sounds like it has lost its memory battery. Usually you
would get a "memory battery low" message as it is on its
way out but you don't mention that so perhaps it has
completely failed.

The battery is rechargeable - if you leave it switched off
and loaded with a fresh set of alkalines for a few days it
may recover. If not contact Garmin as they have replaced
many memory batteries free of charge even out of warranty.

My garmin 545 wont turn on. it was working fine and I switched batteries. now it wont turn on

Follow these directions to replace the system software of your Garmin GPSMAP 545s. This should fix it up. It is not uncommon for firmware to become corrupt when switching batteries on some devices.

  1. Click on "Download" and choose to save the file to your computer.
  2. Choose a location where you can easily find the file, such as the 'My Documents' folder or 'C:\'.
  3. Once the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file.
  4. Double-click on the downloaded file. This will automatically extract the files to C:\Garmin and run a program to transfer the software update to an SD card.
  5. Load the SD card into your GPSMAP 545s and turn it on to replace the system software of your unit.
I hope that helps.

Will not power on

Did you use rechargeable batteries? The Garmin seems to be extremely picky about enough voltage. I had good rechargeables which I use in my foto flashlights, but they did not suffice for the Gamin. Simple non-rechargeable batteries ones solved my problem. Not good for the environment, but for my bearings...

Memory Battery Died in my Garmin GPS 12XL...Can I replace it?

Wildstreak, same happened to my GPSMAP 180. Its old and no longer supported by Garmin. I did call them and they gave me the model and number of the battery (mine is a Panasonic) Also advised that units are heat sealed so I am taking mine to a local electdronics shop that also sells Garmin and have them replace the battery.

Internal Battery Low

Same problem. Remove the 8 screws, unsolder the battery from the circuit board, pry off leads, place electrical tape around edge of new battery, solder on the leads, solder leades on circuit board. Remember which side was up before soldier, close unit, you should be good to go.

I have a Garmin 60csx that won't power up

On my GPSmap 60CSx the screen fades away after powering on - just like the battery is empty. Changed battery and used USB power. Always the same. When removing  the 2GB micro SD memory card then it comes up. Replaced the memory card and now it powers up fine. Seems that the memory card is damaged or causes a short circuit.

276C Memory Battery

There is a button cell soldered to the main circuit board that powers the real-time clock while the unit is off or the main battery is removed or flat. After a couple of years this button cell dies and has to be replaced. I've had this problem twice in five years, and each time replacing the button cell fixes the problem.

Needs a Garmin workshop, or someone who's good with a fine-point soldering iron.

GPS screen went blank

My problem exactly. Unit would start up, acquire satellites, then the screen would go blank with a single vertical line. Unit would not respond to buttons or even turn off. Unit works fine after I did the reset:

- w/unit OFF, press and hold QUIT+DOWN+MENU
- press and release the power button, release DOWN, keep holding QUIT+MENU for 5 seconds.
- unit prompts something like: "erase all data;" choose yes.
- you will lose waypoints, etc.

Go to the Garmin support area for details.
