Question about Pioneer VSX-29TX Receiver

1 Answer

I am having a problem with my Pioneer Elite VSX-20TX receiver. When I first turn it on there is intermient sound coming out. It will play for a couple of secons then stop. This happens for 3-5 minutes. After that, it is fine and works like it is brand new. I was talking to a friend who owned it before me and had the same problem. It was under warranty though when it happened to him. My question is, what is wrong and about how much will it be o fix? Also, is it dangerous for it to be doing this? I am wondering if it would be cheaper to have it fixed or just buy a new one?

This is happening due to a RAM IC on the board on the main board of the receiver. To troubleshoot this issue you'll need to remove the top panel of the receiver. This IC is on the DSP board, but there are no new boards available online. For a while Pioneer was exchanging the receiver for a newer model.
You have to change the position of two surface mount zero-ohm resistors, and replace IC9374 with the EEPROM Pioneer supplies now.

IC Installation procedure---

If you're good it can be done with a standard iron and a small screwdriver.
Apply high quality solder liberally to both ends of the IC with soldering iron, a long tip placed horizontally along the pins is a great help. Alternately heat both ends of the IC, and make sure all pins are bridged
together well. Use the screwdriver to gently lift one end of the IC whilst heating the solder- only lift it enough that solder wick will fit beneath the pins. Wick all solder from the end you just lifted, then heat the other end and slide the IC out of the solder, wick up all remaining solder carefully. Then clean PCB with flux remover, and put your new IC on.

Hope this helps... If it does please do not forget to accept the solution or post back for assistance.
