I have an 8 hp Briggs on a sander salter . 2 weeks back - the starter went out - so I pulled the rope to start it. Today the rope broke trying to start it - so I pulled the housing and put in new rope. With the housing off - I pulled out the spark plug Installed new starter ( works fine) , and noticed no spark. Spins like a new one with s-plug out - no spark ! The coil has resistance ! What now

Since the housing was taken off one of the wires seems to be disconnected for no spark results is what you have now. Best to remove the top and check the wiring again

Even with a resistance , it doesn't mean it is OK.

• Continuity check is OK, But the actual operation may fail

if it is partially shorted.

It cannot drive the High Voltages needed.

• On some veteran technician they use a screwdriver to test

if there is a pulse on the ignition coil. (Manually rotating the

disk )

• But I would not advice for you to do that.( instead use the

Multimeter to test ( voltage ) if there is high enough

voltage to fire the spark plug.

• It could also be from the gap ( air gap ) of the spark plug

or the spark plug itself.

or You may need to borrow one to confirm.

have a check on stop switch or have the

    magnets on the flywheel cleaned

    air gap at .012

if there is no voltage generated ( or supplied ) on your magnetron, even it is good

it will not produce high voltage too.

    Check on the coil also.

I have several older Briggs engines on mower and tillers and was having similar problems. I purchased electronic ignition kit (Nova II) from lawn mower shop and installed with easy wiring instructions (about $12). Used same old coil. Engines ran better, more power and never needs adjustment. Look here for instructions:

One thing to check however, you may have pinched kill wire when removing/installing starter cover. Temporarily remove wire from kill tab on coil and check for spark. Good Luck.

Briggs has a page on testing coil, look here: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines...

I test small engine coils on a growler. A growler produces magnetic pulses as does a spinning flywheel. Be cardfull not to shock yourself as growler produces very hot spark out of coil. Your engine uses a very common coil. It fits from probably 7 thru 16 hp. You could most likely obtain a good coil from mower shop for low cost. One thing however, check that the timing pin is not contributing to problem; although mag type coil will fire just the same if off time. Good Luck

Electric start on craftsman 9 hp snow thrower won't start engine it sound like it's turning but engine won't start. I can start engine with the pull rope. Started last week with the electric start.

Sounds like you need to replace the gear drive on the starter. If the starter turns but the engine is not turning you have starter problems.

Pull cord gets stuck

I recently had a similar problem with an old briggs 3hp engine. In my case the starter clutch was not engaging properly. I then removed the starter rope/clutch mechanism, cleaned it, and rewound the spring. This job is not too difficult but requires a little research if you haven't done it before. It was my first time so I watched several youtube videos (separate videos for the clutch and the starter rope). A few important details on winding the spring were described in the user manual for the Briggs starter rope replacement kit (about $10, including the winding tool). Good luck!

Rope broke

Starter rope is sold at home centers like Lowes and Homedepot. It is important to buy the same thickness of rope so that an ample amount will fit into rewind spool(starter rope is sold by size from 3.5 to 6.5) . Remove the starter cover /fan cover if the starter is riveted to fan cover (or just remove the pull rewind if bolted on). With cover removed, notice how the rope enters thru bushing and ties onto spool. Visualize in which direction the spool turns when you pull the rope. This is the direction that you will be winding the spool. Fish out the old rope and wind the spool in the direction mentioned above. The spool will get tighter as you wind. When the spool will not wind another turn, back-off one turn and align hole in spool to bushing on cover. Insert rope thru bushing into hole and tie knot (any knot that will not obstruct motor parts). At this point allow the rewind to take-in the rope to stop at handle. Test your work. The rope will break if you try to start the washer under load. Press trigger on wand to release pressure. Also the rope is stressed when the operator has a very long strong arm and pulls out the rope to bottom out at the knot. Good luck with your repair

Did you remember to "wind" the cord when you replaced it. They normally have a spring type of set up that you have to wind before you bolt everything together.

How do you put the rewind back together? Is it better to purchase a new unit?

well its not an easy job but it can be done,,,,first you need to put the pully on the spring and wind the spring up tight so it will rewind the starter rope when pulled,,,then tiy the starter rope into the pully,,,easy if you have done it before?

Replace starter cord, briggs & stratton 6.5 MTD mower

my rope broke to lol. i have bought new roape and have reinstalled it. u have to take top of the mower apart. the plastic cover take it off all the way a few bolts u can see un do them. pull off the plastic cover and take gas cap off so it will come off. next u will see 2 bolts on the fron of the mower on the rope houseing. un do them. next behind the mower 2 more bolts. u will see them it holds the rope houseing unit in place. after u unbolt both it will come of easy. next ull see when u tip it upside down a bolt with flat head bolt. use a socket or falt head undo that. next pull out the pully that the rope gose around. install new rope threw hole in rope houseing and threw the rope pully. ull see a srping on the rope pully. its hard for me to get it to wind all the way back up so all i did was roll up the rope best i could and reinstall the pully. titen flat head bolt back in place and reinstall all bolts and plastic cover. it should work now.
