Well the hammer could work for a month or a minute. on a bright note normally when a starter is going out on a ranger you can save yourself a lot of money by fixing your starter rather than buying new. the common problem with them is that the brushes inside the starter wear out. these brushes are easily replaceable. once the starter is out look at the backside of the starter and you will see 2 small bolt heads. these bolts come off to expose the inside of the starter and the first thing you will see inside is the brush assembly. the brushes can be removed (the wire coming out of the starter is part of this assem). i'm not sure if they are so;d at autozone, etc. but most areas have an auto electric shop that can get the brush set for you for a fraction of the price of a starter. hope this is of assistants!
