Question about Singer 3116 Simple

1 Answer

I have the Singer 3116 Simple sewing machine. With the one step button hole, it is fine on the first side but the second side looks more like zig zag. The stitches won't get close enough together.

Singer Simple 3116 only sews backward.Looking for answer I saw earlier that involved several steps including buttonholer

You are stuck in buttonhole. The selector knob does not spin round and around. It is moved from Stitch 1 to stitch 14 and back. Try selecting buttonhole and then running the knob in the other direction to straight stitch. If that does not work, (1) drop the lever that senses the button hole attachment, (2) sew a few stitches backward, (3) push the button hole lever rearward, once, hard, (4) rotate the stitch selector to straight stitch.

Where can I find a power cord for singer simple 3116 sewing machine?

It looks like your power cord and foot pedal are incorporated into one unit, and you'll have to replace the foot pedal to get it. You can get it for $30 at sewing parts online, http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-3116-simple-sewing-machine-parts.aspx?gclid=CLTXmrLC18ECFeHm7AodBioADg, and you can also get them from eBay by doing a search on Singer Simple 3116.

Stitch length for zig zag satin binding 8mm equals what number?

Neat zigzag stitches are usually achieved at "2.5" or below.
Closed up zigzag stitches (close together) are referred to as a
satin stitch its likely you will want to set for 1.5 or at most 2. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/user-manuals/3116-singer-parts-SEWING+MACHINE-manual Look for page 40 in the owners book or scroll down and if you see numbers not on the page but on the scroll bar look for 47. It has some great pitures that can help you out.

Does the singer 3116 come with a blind stitch for hemming

Most sewing machines come with a blind hem stitch. It is the one that looks like several small zig-zags then occasionally a large one, or several straight stitches then a large zig-zag. Either will result in an invisible hem.

Some machines have a special foot but it is not necessary, mine does not. There is however a special way of folding the fabric.

Buttonhole making instructions from the manual of the Singer Simple do not seem to be accurate. The tension is incorrect and the machine is only sewing down one side without creating the satin stitch/...

Some machines will start out by sewing a straight stitch all the way around the buttonhole area first and then will zigzag/satin stitch along the sides. Bar tacks will be the last stitches sewn - hope this helps!

Stitch pattern is wrong

Here's the manual,

http://safemanuals.com/user-guide-instructions-owner-manual/SINGER/3116-_M

Lets see if we can do some troubleshooting.

Have you checked your needle (size, for thread your using, material)
It sounds like a tension/settings issue, but could be as simple as poor thread quality. try changing the thread, and rewinding the bobbin. If using a silky material remember you need to back that up and make it stiff.
If this and a resetting of tension doesnt work,

Check your left side right side balance (pg 57)
Check page 84 on trouble shooting

I have a Singer 7442. Was working fine and we recently moved. Now when I start showing, it sews for about 5 seconds then there is a beeping sound and all of the lights flash on the front of the sewing...

the problem may be in the button hole lever sensor . Next time it stops try moving this lever up and down. if it works ,great. If it doesn't , well, the machine has at least a 2 year warranty on electronics.
