Question about Washing Machines

2 Answers

I can not get the agitator to come apart on my Whirlpool WTW5540SQ0 washer. I need to replace the dog ears. I have the agitator out, and can see where I need to replace the dog ears, but I can not get it to separate into 2 pieces. Directions say to stand on the bottom part and twist and lift on the top, but there is no moving it. Thank you, Nancy Loren

If you look down inside the agitator you will see 2 small plastic "catches" holding the 2 parts together.
These have to come loose.
It will take some serious force to pull the 2 pieces apart.
The instructions you have are correct.
You simply have to pull much much harder.

They are plastic, very small, and difficult to see.

NEED TO REMOVE AN AGITATOR FROM A WASHING MACHINE

  • 1 First you must determine the brand of washing machine you have.

  • 2 To remove agitator on a whirlpool washer, remove top cap from agitator, Next you will find a translucent cap, remove this with your pliers. Then you will see a 3/8 inch nut, Back this nut out and you can then remove the agitator. Be Careful though, inside the agitator where the bolt has been removed is a white piece of plastic that holds the "dog ears". These dog ears are what lets the agitator move in one direction and locks when the transmission moves back in the other direction.

Maytag and Admiral washers are very similar to remove. General Electric, (GE) is different, To remove a GE agitator simply pull upwards very hard, GE agitators snap on. Be careful not to pop it into your mouth, that really hurts.

  • 3 Remove agitator, repair or replace and reset, GE just push on, you will be able to see the groves to line up the agitator to the hub. For whirlpool place bolt into dog ear guide, and set down on top of transmission post and tighten, be careful that dog ears, do not get out of alignment. That's it.

    Buy F150 parts.

    Whirlpool washer agitator not working

You most likely need to replace the dogs in the agitator, two piece agitator design. It should spin one way and catch the other on the teeth of the dogs. It will spin freely either way when the dogs are wore out. This is for the top half of the agitator, bottom is fitted to transmission shaft. You pop the top cover, remove the 7/16 bolt and both halves together to change dogs of agitator. Pull halves apart to change dogs. Fairly simple.

Top load washer agitator is not working properly--not getting full agitation.

Most whirlpool washers have a dual action agitator. It sounds like the top part is not working. There are 4 small gears that turn that part of the agitator . Remove the top cap of agitator and replace the dog ears, most appliance parts stores stock them and they are pretty inexpensive. Thanks

The following link should help you with removing the agitator to replace the dogs:

Whirlpool models generally only have two methods of removing the agitator. One type uses a hex bolt, and the other uses a recessed square nut. The removal procedures are explained in the link provided. I hope this helps you. Please let me know if still have questions.

    Top load Whirlpool washing machine

Many Whirlpool built 'direct drive' washers use a 2 piece agitator. There are cogs called 'dogs' or 'dog ears' and a cam between the two halves of the agitator which can wear leading to a clicking/ticking sound and reduced movement of the top agitator section during the wash cycle leading to poor cleaning results. In most cases these worn parts can be replaced without much cost or difficulty. If you have this style of washer this should help.
